The Magik Scarf

The Magik Scarf

World of Daegries Series Book 1

by M.K. Browning

Genre: YA Fantasy

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

Sure! I am M.K. Browning, which is very close to my real name! I have written 19 or so other pieces of fiction and published them under Kim Smith, Author. I got started in the authoring world back in the early 2000s before the world of the Internet was yet available to regular folks. As technology improved, so did my choice to be an indie author. I published with several small publishers around 2011 and they all went out of business. Disheartening! But I learned how to do everything myself and went that direction. Now as MKB I am going back to small publisher publishing. I will have my new book with HowlingWolfPress.com and am excited to pass off some of the backend chores.

What is something unique/quirky about you?

I am a professional tarot reader at a local metaphysical store. In my life, I have been an IT specialist, office assistant, telephone seller, and cashier at a fast-food fish place. I have also co-owned a video production service with my late hubby and shot more video and photography than I care to admit.

Tell us something really interesting that's happened to you!

I used to be a part of four people who ran the writing site Writers 4 Writers (early 2000s) and also, Murder by 4. MB4 was always on the list of 101 Best Sites by Writers Digest back in the day. I felt like a special author because of that. We sure did get a lot of traffic!

What are some of your pet peeves?

People who constantly whine about their life on social media. I follow a lot of folks and if they become that constant meh meh meh, I unfollow fairly quickly. I have a bit of anxiety some days and I just cannot bear that. Besides, we all have problems. Make us feel better, not worse!

Where were you born/grew up at?

I was born and bred in Memphis, Tennessee. Spent most of my growing up years there before moving to north Mississippi. Raised my kids there, until they moved away for lives of their own. About four years ago, my new hubby and I moved to central Florida. It’s like being on vacation every day. I love it! But I’m still a serious Southerner. Eudora Welty and William Faulkner live in my writing.

If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?

Writing HARD – hoping to get enough down that someone else could pick it up and get it published for me posthumously.

Who is your hero and why?

This answer has changed through the years… and now my hero and person of the year for me is J. R. R. Tolkien. I am currently reading his Letters. And it has seriously changed my life, as I get an insider view of his life, his loves, his fears, and his writings. Highly recommend The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien!

Magik, once unleashed, can have very unpredictable results...

Magik, once unleashed, can have very unpredictable results...

Sixteen-year-old Alyssa Chance Oh had been called many things. Magician, sorcerer’s apprentice, even witch. But nothing had prepared her for being called a failure.

After botching her first solo spell, where she only partially reanimates her grandfather into a voice in a toy jack-in-the-box, Alyssa has to set out to find and return a gryphon king’s magik scarf or else he will do something unspeakable to her grandmother.

But that sneaky scarf is not where the king said it was, and now the only way to get to it is through a dragon’s lair.

 Excerpt:

Losing a loved one to death is terrible. Bringing them back has other assorted issues. And when it’s your own flesh and blood… well, necromancy has limits.

Alyssa Chance Oh tensed against the problems before her. She stood in her family’s log house in her bedroom, turning about once or twice, trying to assess things.

The house stood like a pinprick on the river’s edge. A mere smudge in the grand scheme of the whole of Daegries. But it was her entire world, the only home that ever mattered. And her family, grown even smaller recently, needed her to take charge.

Alyssa sighed, staring at items strewn on her bedroom floor. She’d been up early, studying spells, trying to figure out what wasn’t working. “Why do I have to jump up and down on the bed? This incantation sounds like something a fool would say.”

Alyssa had tried the spell twice, spouting different words and performing various actions as she saw fit, but nothing had happened. No flash of light, no smell of sulfur… no risen grandfather. Nothing. And she desperately wanted her grandfather back on this side of the dirt.

She sat absently flicking at the petals of a sundew plant sitting on the scuffed wooden desk. Magik usually kicked in at sixteen, and her birthday had been a few months ago. But apparently, that wasn’t a sure-fire win at spell casting.

Bitterly eyeing the thick book she’d been using for the spell, Alyssa grabbed it, and her deep blue eyes darted back and forth over the text written in tiny script. “I have to get this done.”

Surviving the Darkness

Well, we've come to the end of my Darkness series, Surviving the Darkness.

This story follows the lives of Deborah Carmichael and Zachary Adams. Deborah is a famous pianist, who, unfortunately, has a stalker bent on having him for himself.
Zack is the owner of the only paranormal bar in Jacobs Cove. He's a shifter who isn't always on the law's good side.

There is an instant attraction when Zack meets Deborah and when he finds out she's had trouble with a stalker, he's determined to help her out.

I hadn't written a shifter story before so doing this one I had to decide what kind of shifter I wanted him to be. I decided to go for the full gusto.

So I hope you enjoy this story as much as I did creating it.

Surviving the Darkness
Bk 8

Blurb:

Surviving an abduction, and running home to hide, might seem like a good idea. Except home is now run by vampires.

Deborah Carmichael had it all. Fame, fortune, and an amazing gift bringing songs to life on her piano. Until a madman began stalking her. At first he seemed harmless, attending her concerts, asking for autographs. Then he turned creepy, sending photos of himself, wearing identical dresses she wore, including dressing up mannequins in her likeness. But one night she made a deadly mistake: sending her bodyguard away. It was the perfect opportunity for her abductor to strike.

Rich, debonair, and owner of the only vampire/demon establishment in Jacobs Cove, Zachary Adams has it all. Or so he thinks. When a beautiful, troubled young woman walks into his club, he is instantly taken by her. As he helps her overcome her fears, teaching her to stand up and fight, Zach discovers she is the one. His light.

When her abductor finds her, and takes her captive, Deborah fears this will be the end. Will Zach locate her in time, or will Deborah find the strength to fight?

Excerpt:

Deborah stood before the rag doll dummy with pursed lips. Zach had just explained to her that she should apply all her force when punching the dummy, yet she felt foolish doing so. Not to mention she worried that if she did, the poor thing would topple over or break.

“You can’t hurt it.”

“I know that,” she sighed, then balled her hand into a fist and jabbed it at the dummy’s belly. Zach snorted beside her.

“My grandmother can punch harder than that. Come on, Deborah, give it all you’ve got.”

Deepening her frown, she jabbed the dummy one more time, with a little more heat.

“If he had a voice he’d be laughing at you right now. Hit him, Deborah!”

Shooting Zach a heated glare, she balled her hand and plowed it into the dummy’s gut. It rocked, it teetered but it remained standing.

“See. Now kick it.”

“I will not.”

“Oh for pity sake, Deborah. It’s an inanimate object. It has no feelings. Kick it.”

He was beginning to piss her off. Lifting her right foot, she jutted it out at the dummy with enough force to have it rock back and forth several times before coming to a stop. “Happy?”

“Not particularly, no.” He walked behind the dummy and lifted one ragged arm. “Is that all you’ve got? Come on weakling, bring it on.”

Rolling her eyes, Deborah laughed. “Now you’re just being foolish.”

“Look at you, all frail and scrawny. Those arms are like tooth-picks. You can’t take me; you’re too weak.” Zach played the dummy while lowering his voice.

“Why do you want me to beat on this poor, defenseless object? We both know I can punch and kick.”

“Why did I get you to scream for two days?”

 “Because you’re a sadist?”

One blond brow lifted. “I’ve never been called that before. No, it was to open you up, bring out the fighter in you. Now kick me, Deb and do it with meaning.”

“You never call me Deb.” She hauled off and planted her foot in the dummy’s leg. She was sure if Zach hadn’t been behind it, the thing would have toppled over.

“Because Deborah suites you better. The dummy called you Deb. Do that again, only this time with your left.” She did, but she didn’t have as much power in her left as she had in her right. “Good, now try the side kick I showed you and go for his mid chest.”

“This is all fine and good for a dummy, but there is no way I can do this to a human.” But she did as he asked and shifting to her left, raised her right leg and jammed it into the dummy’s chest.

“Yes you can and you will. Now go with the left.”

She repeated the move with her left, frowning at Zach. “No I can’t and I won’t. I can’t hurt someone.”

“Oh, so you would rather they hurt you. It’s your life or his— which one do you value more?”

 “That’s a stupid question.”

 “Answer it.”

“Mine,” she demanded with a determined expression.

“I don’t think you really mean that,” Zach taunted, flapping the dummy’s arms at her. “Say it with conviction.”

“Mine,” she repeated a little firmer, throwing her right fist out to the dummy’s abdomen.

“Still not good enough.”

“Mine,” she demanded and this time put everything she had into the kick. She gasped when both Zach and the dummy went flying. Zach came down hard on his back, dummy resting on top. “I am so sorry! Are you all right?” Rushing to his side, she pushed the dummy away, noticing how heavy it really was, and placed her hand on Zach’s face.

“Now, that was better.” Looking up at her, he smiled.

“Are you hurt?”

“Nothing I can’t manage.”

The air rushed from her lungs as he yanked her down on top of him and plastered his mouth over hers. She was too dazed to reject him, and by the time her mind cleared, her body was reacting with delight. His lips were so smooth, so gifted and as he took the kiss deeper she felt herself melting. His arms wound around her waist as his hands came to rest on his chest. She felt his heart beating against her palm and realized suddenly that hers was matching his. He rolled them until she was on her back and he on top. He braced one hand to her left keeping his weight from crushing her. His free hand strolled lazily along her side, over her arm until he reached her face. Then he did something so sweet, so sensual it made her body quiver. With only the tips of his fingers, he traced her face from chin to forehead and back as he turned the kiss from an urgent battle of lips to a slow melting of mouths. She felt herself floating and never wanted to come down. Then he released her mouth and rested his forehead on hers.

“Yep, that did the trip. I feel much better now.”

“Why did you stop?” she murmured. When her eyes opened she found them connecting with his. They were so blue, so…beautiful.

“How foolish of me.” His lips curving in a smile, he leaned back down and continued his seduction of her mouth.

Almost Heaven

Almost Heaven

Merciless Few MC West Virginia Chapter #1

by M.D. Stewart

Genre: Contemporary MC Romance

Almost Heaven is a dark, emotional tale of how the power of love can heal even the deepest of wounds.

Gunnar "Viking" Anderson
I never thought I’d return to West Virginia, not after my father was convicted of murdering my girlfriend, Hailey. But when my father dies, I’m forced to face the hometown I left behind. I’ve closed myself off to a happy life, content with the brotherhood I’ve found in the Merciless Few MC. That is, until I saved Diana Taylor during a brutal assault.

Diana Taylor
I’m searching for my missing niece but it's Viking who ignites a search for something more. Despite his reservations, he says he can't help being drawn to my strength and unwavering determination to find, and save Mariska. As I fight to break down his walls, I know Viking must confront the demons of his past or we won’t have a future. Am I strong enough to help him heal, and discover that love is worth fighting for?

Almost Heaven excerpts:

Main Characters Meet POV: Diana (249 words)

If I live to be one hundred, I will always remember the sight of a blond-haired man in a black vest holding one of my attackers up by his shirt with his left hand, while he pummeled the guy’s face with his right fist. The man on the ground was being held in place by a bald guy in a similar vest. His huge black boot was positioned in the middle of my other attacker’s chest while a gun was pointed at his head.

“Careful, Viking. You might kill him.” The man with the gun didn’t sound to upset by the fact.

Once the blond guy, Viking, tossed the unconscious man to the ground, he picked up the second one. I watched him frown as he gave the man a shake, bouncing his head like a rag doll. “Pathetic chickenshit fainted.” Raring back his right hand he punched the unconscious man in the face. I heard a loud pop just before blood gushed from my second attacker’s nose.

Wiping his hand on the dude’s shirt, Viking dropped the second man to land on my other attacker. “DB, clean up this mess. Brass, get a hold of Doc.” He looked at me and grimaced. “Tell him to hurry.”

My body was going into shock. I could feel it starting to shake and my breathing grew labored. I was going to pass out. The last words I heard uttered were, “Well, fuck. Razor, catch her before she hits her head again.”

Second excerpt: POV Viking (391 words)

Doc nodded and opened his medical bag, pulling out a pair of scissors. I grabbed the doorknob but came rushing back in when her cry of fear rang through the room. Doc had started to cut her jeans. I could hear her begging him to stop as she flailed her arms.

“Diana.” My voice was harsher than I intended. I had to swallow the fear that she would seriously hurt herself. I softened my tone. “Diana, you’re safe.”

“Don’t, don’t leave me. I trust you.” Her voice sounded hoarse, deeper than I would’ve expected.

“I was just giving you privacy. They need to remove your clothes to clean you up. Doc is, well, a doctor, and the women are here to help. You don’t know me, so I don’t want to embarrass you.”

She opened her eyes, the right one was nearly swollen shut from the large pump knot above her brow. I found myself looking into the most beautiful emerald green eyes I’ve ever seen.

“Please. I know you s-saved me. Stay.” I could tell it hurt her to talk. “Don’t know anyone.”

Doc grabbed the scissors and continued to cut her jeans and torn shirt from her body. I tried not to ogle her luscious curves. When I sighed, Doc just shook his head. “Take off her shoes and be careful of her ankles. She might have sprained one or both.”

I did as he asked, trying not to jostle her too much. Her bright red toenail polish was chipped and growing out. Something about the sight went straight to my gut. I was brought back down when I saw her knees. They were red, bruised, and raw. Her shins were pretty banged up too. Fuck.

“Now that she’s asleep, I’ll give her wrist a more thorough exam.” He lightly grasped her right forearm, his fingers probed from her elbow to her hand. Even with pain medication, Diana moaned when he got to her wrist. “Without x-rays I can’t be positive she didn’t break something. It’s damn sure swollen. I’ll put a splint on it to be safe. What shape are her ankles in?”

I glanced down, noticing I was rubbing the painful scrapes on her lower leg. I jerked my hand back like she was on fire. I hated to admit I felt like I’d touched the sun.

Editorial Reviews

Review

*5-star rating by K.C. Finn, Reviewer with "Reader's Favorite"*

"Author Jodi Lea Stewart has crafted a mighty tale that packs a huge emotional punch, and you can feel its impact on every page of this excellent novel. The central protagonists, Mercy and Annie, could not be more different on the page, and the dialogue and descriptive work put into this distinction are effective and highly imaginative. It is the twisting events of the intriguing and unusual plot line that brings out their similarities and the true human spirit, which is a wonderful thing to become more and more invested in as the story continues. The historical atmosphere of the piece was also vividly portrayed. I really adored St. Louis in a time of such progress, yet so much tension. Overall, I would definitely recommend TRIUMPH, a Novel of the Human Spirit to readers who enjoy historical sagas that deliver on friendship, hope, and heart.

Written for an adult readership, the work does contain graphic scenes and some disturbing imagery that is relevant to the present danger of the plot."

* Five Stars for Jodi Lea Stewart's latest literary treasure*
"In her new book, TRIUMPH, prolific author, Jodi Lea Stewart, brilliantly tackles a lineup of some of the toughest literary challenges a writer can face. Writing in the present tense. Telling a dual time frame story. Dealing with dialect. Writing from a young protagonist's perspective. And, the most challenging of all--shedding a light of hope and encouragement on the most incendiary social concern of our nation--racism. Ordinarily, in the hands of a less skilled writer, any one of these could be the kiss of death of a novel. That's not the case with Stewart. The characters are compelling and believable. The settings are powerful and rendered with a touch of uncanny realism. The literary magic spell Stewart casts over this story is so effective, you do not realize the commanding lesson it teaches until you close the cover and replay all the clever and endearing elements that make it so thought-provoking.

I have read Stewart's other books, and I am always pleasantly surprised at her ability to deliver her deep universally themed messages wrapped in disarmingly simple premises."
~ DB Jackson,  Author, Screenwriter, Winner of the WesternHeritage Award

*5-star Review by Cyrus Webb - Media Personality, Author, and Top-Amazon Reviewer*
"In TRIUMPH, author Jodi Lea Stewart shows that time and place have nothing to do with the power of the human spirit. The reader will see themselves in characters that might not look like them but carry their desire to rise and thrive--and therein lies its power and a lesson..."

Reviewed by Ruffina Oserio for Readers' Favorite
Review Rating:  5 Stars - Congratulations on your 5-star review!

A beautiful story that is deftly told, Triumph is set over long years and has the reader drifting through different timelines and across different cities. The author writes about three storylines in the novel and combines different narrative voices, including an irresistible first-person narrative voice that stays with the reader throughout. The lyrical writing, coupled with the apt use of the local accent, enriches the story and augments the realism that permeates it. The reader can picture the characters and know about their background from how they speak. The author handles themes that are as relevant and sensitive to contemporary readers as these were to characters since 1903. This is one of those novels that compel readers to think about one of the pressing problems of America: the color line. And it also asks serious questions about identity. Triumph: A Novel of the Human Spirit is a powerful testimony that we can outgrow the pettiness that defines people by their color and see a human spirit behind the shade of skin.

From the Author

TRIUMPH, a Novel of the Human Spirit is extra special to me for many reasons, not the least of which is because it exemplifies my personal feelings about ethics and the differences in human beings as something to be celebrated, not feared or hated. The keys are always respect and acceptance regardless of race or creed or whatever the world wants to call "imperfect" or "different."

Other sub-
reasons for writing this novel were to highlight life in St. Louis and beyond in the 1950s and early 1960s. I wanted to expose some of the dangers (okay, the horrors) lurking in old New Orleans, honor the Texas Rangers, and express my respect for people who learn how to overlook the color barriers that separate and dishonor us as people.

TRIUMPH, a Novel of the Human Spirit is for readers who enjoy high-concept books written with a literary pen, and those who wish to see justice fulfilled and old prejudices shattered.

When Cardinals Appear

When Cardinals Appear

The Love Birds Book 1

by Katie Eagan Schenck

Genre: Women's Romance Fiction

She has a promise to keep. But when her plans are thrown into a tailspin, will a persistent red bird show her how to let her dreams take flight?

From the Author.

When Cardinals Appear came into being a few months after my maternal grandmother died. I had heard the saying “a cardinal appears when angels are near” throughout my life, but never so often as I did after we lost my grandmother. I have a lot of Southern Baptist relatives, and whenever one of my mom’s siblings would post on Facebook about seeing a cardinal, inevitably someone would leave a comment that it was my grandmother checking in.

The idea fascinated me. I knew I was going to write another romance novel, and I found the cardinal belief inspirational. I started thinking, what if a person who had passed on was desperately trying to get a message to a loved one they’d left behind? What if these two people had a complicated relationship? Maybe one of them had a secret of something they had done to the other in the past that they regretted. How would the person left behind cope when they learned the truth? What would happen if they ignored the message their loved one was trying to convey?

All of these questions led me to write When Cardinals Appear. What started as a simple sweet romance eventually morphed into a coming of age women’s fiction with a second chance romance subplot. I originally wrote the novel from both Lanie and Nate’s points of view, but came to realize that just wasn’t working. It was always more Lanie’s story, and eventually I decided it was high time I allowed her to tell it.

She has a promise to keep. But when her plans are thrown into a tailspin, will a persistent red bird show her how to let her dreams take flight?

Lanie McAllister is ready to move on. Wrestling with her mom’s death, the young woman just wants to settle the estate and soar off for good to her boyfriend in California—far away from painful memories. But she suspects the lucky cardinal she keeps seeing is trying to send a message when a flat tire puts her back in the path of the man who broke her heart.

With fate constantly throwing the man her mother always hated in her way, Lanie can’t seem to shake the wounds of the past. And when her current love makes a serious misstep and she discovers her ex harbors a secret, she starts to rethink what will make her truly happy.

Questioning her vow to her mother to never look back, is the cardinal a clue Lanie’s true happiness is hiding in plain sight?

When Cardinals Appear is the emotional first book in The Love Birds women’s romantic fiction series. If you like heroines who grow, overcoming loss, and second chances, then you’ll adore Katie Eagan Schenck’s bittersweet tale.

Excerpt

Ping. I glanced down, and my stomach dropped.

Hey, Nate here. I need to drop off my contribution as well. Happy to pick you up on the way, Lanie.

I set my phone down and grabbed the mug, gulping down the scalding liquid and instantly regretting it. My throat burned, and for a moment, I thought I might be sick. But I yanked a chair out and slid into it, laying my head on my hands. The nausea passed, and I took another tentative sip of coffee. Still too hot, but the warmth and caffeine helped to wake up my brain.

What should I do? On the one hand, I needed a ride, and Nate’s offer was more than gracious, though I suspected he felt obligated since my car was still in his shop.

On the other hand, my attempts to avoid Nate had so far been unsuccessful, and agreeing to a ride would be the equivalent of admitting defeat. How many more awkward conversations could one person be expected to survive?

I weighed my options. Rose and Steven were both off that day. However, they were planning to visit a caterer for a tasting. While they could likely drop me off on their way, I would be stuck at the school until they were finished, giving the universe ample opportunity to throw Nate in my face again. Perhaps it would be better to accept my fate and meet him willingly. Then I would avoid any surprises like the other day at lunch.

Torn over what to do, I picked up my coffee and stepped to the window. My eyes swept over the backyard, taking in the shortening shadows as the sun rose in the sky. A familiar flash of red caught my attention, and I leaned toward the glass. The little cardinal was back, perched on the railing and staring right at me.

“Am I crazy to see him again?” I asked. The bird flitted closer and settled on a branch right outside the window. I’d never seen a cardinal so close before. The distinctive black dots resembling freckles were clear near its beak, confirming it was the same cardinal I’d seen before.

“It feels like a bad idea,” I continued as the little bird flitted closer to the window.

“Maybe I should say no and take my chances with Steven and Rose.” The bird cocked its head and chirped. Was it my imagination, or was there a hint of disapproval in the bird’s song? Shaking my head, I tried to snap out of it, but something about the tilt of the bird’s head and the way it fluffed its wings was eerily reminiscent of a look Mom used to give me.

Before I could process the resemblance, the bird flew away, and I was left disquieted. I ran a hand over my face. Great, I was talking to birds. Was I going crazy? I returned to the table and drained the last of my coffee. The weird resemblance between the cardinal and Mom meant nothing. My confusion over Nate was causing me to wish my mom was there. That was all. With that justification, I rinsed out the mug in the sink.

As I picked up my phone, Nate’s message stared at me, waiting, mocking. With a sigh, I typed a message back, hoping I wouldn’t live to regret it.

Sounds good. Thanks, Nate.
