GUEST POST
Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
I’m the author of eight books, both fiction and nonfiction. My focus is always on personal development. My interest in personal development started many years ago when I worked at a national television station in Denmark. There were so many poor leadership and conflicts, and I decided to look deeper into how we can better understand ourselves. That has been an ongoing interest of mine for the past 24 years. After I left the television business, I started to give lectures on personal growth and began to write books as well. Today I give lectures in business all over the world and train both leaders and employees to become more conscious and thrive more. I live in Denmark with my partner and two boys.
Where were you born/grew up at?
I was born in Denmark and grew up here, too. At the age of 16, I left home and moved to Australia for six months. I totally fell in love with the people and country and came back twice for another year and a half. After living and working in Australia, I decided to return to Denmark, where I have lived since.
If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?
I would spend it with my family. They are the most important to me.
What kind of world ruler would you be?
Kind, loving, and sharing. I think we should help each other more and not be so scared of reaching out. I would base my leadership on trust and kindness and encourage people to take responsibility for nature and their emotions and support each other.
What are you passionate about these days?
I’m always passionate about personal growth. Sharing what I know is a deep passion of mine and I do it as much as I can. It’s my way of trying to make the world a better place.
What do you do to unwind and relax?
I love to ride on my bike or go for a walk in nature. But I also love a great series. Right now, I’m watching The Traitors. What a great show and study of human behavior.
How to find time to write as a parent?
I am very organized and great at getting things done. Whenever I have time, I make writing a priority. I never have many days where I can write, I write when it’s possible.
Describe yourself in 5 words or less!
Wise, caring, curious, determined and fun.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
After I wrote my first non-fiction book that became a best seller and translated into five languages.
Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?
I would love for my three novels to be made into a movie or series. That would be amazing.
As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
The eagle. It has a great overview and know when and where to strike.
Stuff about the Book:
What inspired you to write this book?
I had written a book about change in Danish, and in the beginning, I was just going to translate it into English. But when I started to go through it, I could see that I had so much more tools and insights that weren’t in the book. I wrote the other book five years ago. So, I started all over and put all the greatest tools and knowledge in the book. When I give lectures, people often ask me; where can I read more? And this is it.
What can we expect from you in the future?
I am working on a sequel to my In-Between series, but before I finish that, I’m doing a PhD in Transformative business leadership. The focus will be on Emotional Intelligence, which will most likely also be my next book.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I included many examples and stories from my own life and students' stories in the book. They make it much easier to relate to and implement in your own life. It was great to write these stories.
Who designed your book covers?
I did it myself. I’m a nerd when it comes to my books. I know exactly how I want it to look and then it’s easier to do it myself.
If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
Absolutely not. I included so many great tools and insights. Now I just hope they will help many people deal with challenges and change in a better way.
Anything specific you want to tell your readers?
This is an easy-to-understand and easy-to-use self-help book. I like to share complex knowledge that I have made easy to relate to and use in your everyday life. It’s for anyone who like to be able to deal with change or challenges in a better way. Life doesn’t have to be hard, we have a choice in every single moment.
How did you come up with name of this book?
I didn’t. I got some help from a great colleague. She is amazing with titles and online courses. So, I told her about the book for fifteen minutes, and she said: The title is Be Your Own Rock.
What is your favourite part of this book and why?
That is a tough one. Every chapter contains different tools for becoming more conscious. The one that has helped me the most is the emotional intelligence part and learning to fall though emotions instead of clinging on to them.
Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
Nobody goes through life without being challenged. This book can help you learn to deal with challenges and change in a better way so you don’t struggle but thrive and learn. It is a must-read for young people, too, and I wish for them that they find this book. The world is ever-changing and if you want to be true to yourself and authentic, you need the tools to be your own rock.
How long have you been writing?
I began writing in the year 2000. My first book was a non-fiction book. Since then I have written tree fiction books and five non-fiction books.
Do you see writing as a career?
I will also combine my writing with teaching. I get a lot of inspiration from teaching and can also see how the tools and cases land with my students. I write the same way as I teach.
Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
Self-help. I find it so hard to find fiction books that catch my attention.
Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
I have made writing playlists. They are full of songs that don’t disturb me. I have a special playlist for the In-Between series that I always listen to. When I write non-fiction I listen to different music.
Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?
I would love to say that I’m only writing one at a time. But right now, I’m working on a novel, the fourth book in the In-Between series and also a book on Emotional Intelligence.
Tell us about a favorite character from a book.
That has to be Thomas from my In-Between series.
What made you want to become an author and do you feel it was the right decision?
I have so much knowledge that I want to share with as many people as possible. I have a deep desire and drive to make our world a better place, and this is my contribution. With books, I can make the tools and insights for a better life accessible to people all over the world. My lectures are way more limited to a lower number of people.
Advice they would give new authors?
Don’t think too much about what you want to write and how it sounds. Just write. Don’t stop and correct your grammar or mistakes. Just write. Writing is a muscle you need to exercise, just like going to the gym.
Describe your writing style.
Easy and at eye level. I write the same way as I talk.
What is your writing process? For instance, do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?
That depends on whether I write fiction or non-fiction. With Be Your Own Rock, I made a rough outline. When I began to write, I could see that some tools were missing, and I had to add more. The book unfolded as I went through it. When I write fiction, I’m on a journey with the readers, and I don’t know what will happen or where the story will take us. I’m just as excited as the readers.
What are common traps for aspiring writers?
Your self-judgment. It kills your creativity. We are so hard on ourselves. Don’t be. Just write. Or thinking that it must be a book. Nobody knows what it will be. We are usually aiming to hight and making it too hard to begin.
Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
I write what I find essential. If the readers can use it, I’m so happy.
