The Bluff

A crumbling bluff, two unsolved homicides, and a woman on the edge. Haunted by her husband’s untimely death, Kate must navigate treacherous waters and leave Crest Lake and her tragic past behind...before it all unravels.

 The Bluff

by Bonnie Traymore

Genre: Psychological Thriller

“Gripping and full of surprises, The Bluff is a clever psychological suspense with layered characters and an atmospheric setting. Traymore masterfully ratchets up the tension little-by-little until the shocking, explosive end.” –Tracey Devlyn, USA Today bestselling author

“What do you have to lose, Kate?” Ryan asked me, as we stood on the bluff looking out on Lake Michigan.

Turns out, almost everything.

When I first moved from Manhattan to this small town six years ago, I worried about many things. I worried about finding a job. I worried that I’d be bored. I worried that my relationship with charming photographer Ryan Breslow was moving too fast. But I never worried about whether the ground beneath my feet would crumble—both literally and figuratively.

My marriage didn’t go as I’d imagined. A year ago, Ryan met his untimely death in a car accident that’s still under investigation. Isolated and alone, all I wanted was to sell my home and leave Crest Lake and its painful memories behind.

But with my home inching ever closer to the edge of the crumbling bluff, the property has become unmarketable. All of us on the lakefront have lost chunks of property, and tempers are at a boiling point about what to do next.

And now, on the evening of a contentious vote about how to fix this pressing issue, my nemesis on the shoreline committee has been murdered. I know how it looks, but it’s not what it seems. I have to get my plan passed and cash out.

Because I have secrets.

And they won’t stay buried forever.

Exiles

Ron's journey is met with life-affirming friendships and lessons along the way.

Exiles

Reflections of Michael Trilogy Book 3

by L.J. Ambrosio

Genre: Contemporary Fiction, Coming of Age

In this final book in the Reflections of Michael Trilogy, Michael's wish was for Ron to exile himself in the heart of Paris with its beautiful culture and citizens as they protest and fight for the soul of the city. Ron's journey is met with life-affirming friendships and lessons along the way.

A story that began with A Reservoir Man, and continued in Reflections on the Boulevard, concludes with this final book, Exiles.

EXCERPT

CHAPTER ONE

A cool autumn breeze, in the twilight, wrapped around our exile who sat on a bench in front of a bookstore that resembled a place we might find in a Tolkien novel. On this street, rue de la Buccheri, was the bookstore Shakespeare and Company. The store itself was famous for housing the books of many great literary artists on their shelves. They also supported any young or old artistic vagabonds by allowing them to sleep in the aisles of the bookstore on makeshift beds when finding themselves homeless.

Ron, who managed the store, sat on this bench every evening thinking of Michael. Ron thought of things he remembered and how much he learnt from Michael. He felt the emptiness in his soul, yearning to have that connection just one more time. He had lived in Paris for six years now, a brief time for an exile, yet he was free from a society drowning in untruths; his refuge was the bookstore.

Just like every night, as Ron prepared to close the store, he occasionally checked the front of the store, looking for his friend. Then, he noticed another young man still looking at books on the outside shelves.

Ron moved outside to get a closer look at the late customer under the guise of moving the outdoor book bins back inside. He suddenly noticed that the young man was putting a book down his pants.

Ron raised his voice and shouted for the thief to put the book back on the shelf. The young man, caught in the act, ran away.

The young man sprinted and tripped while running past the café. In this stumble, he decided to turn the corner and make his way rapidly toward la Seine.

Ron, weak in the legs from forgetting the spirit of his youth, had been managing bookstores more than living life. His legs pumped forward. but with the awkwardness of an old man who had forgotten how to walk. In a few seconds he was up to speed and ran faster to catch the thief.

Near the corner, Ron had missed his opportunity to slow and check for other people walking, so he slammed into a group of women. He especially blasted into an old lady whose groceries flew into the sky, and a yogurt splattered against a wall and the faces of the other women. She turned to condemn her assailant, but he was already on the next block in pursuit of the thief.

He spotted the thief at the Notre Dame Hotel, out of breath, leaning against a pillar. Surprised at the thief’s choice to stop here, he slowed down and let his feet pound the street into a halt.

Ron grabbed at him but still missed his shoulder.

“Give me the book back!” he said, very loudly.

The thief just shrugged his shoulder, a mocking smile. His smile made the act of chasing him through the streets feel silly, as if this were a game that had been played and he took it too seriously.

The thief looked at Ron and asked, sarcastically, “What language are you speaking?”

“What do mean? I am speaking French!”

Our thief laughed, turned to a random man who walked down the street, and said, "This young man thinks he is speaking French Go ahead say something to this stranger; he will tell you are speaking some other language other than French!”

“I will call the police,” Ron said firmly.

What readers are saying:

“Each character Ron meets during his personal journey is unique, and they all feel like real people, something Ambrosio has proven time and again is a strength of his. If you enjoy literary fiction with an epic personal journey woven through the pages, then you need to read this trilogy.”  - Amazon Review

“This book, like the ones before it, evokes a range of emotions—laughter, fear, excitement, wonder, and grief. Ambrosio’s ability to weave these feelings into the narrative is what makes the trilogy so special.” - Amazon Review

“Exiles is a brilliant book that will leave you spellbound with its emotional payoff. Author Ambrosio's finale to the Reflections of Michael Trilogy is a must-read for anyone who appreciates literary fiction that speaks to the soul.” - Goodreads Review

About the Author

I attended college at Ohio Wesleyan where I struggled with physics. Having made so many mistakes in college with physics, there weren’t too many left to make and I did quite well at graduate school at Purdue.

I worked for twenty years at Choate Rosemary Hall, an exclusive boarding school in the heart of Connecticut. More often than not, students arrived in limousines. There was a wooded area by the upper athletic fields where I would take my children for a walk. There, under a large oak tree, stories about the elves would be weaved into the surrounding forest.

Returning to my home town to help with a father struggling with Alzheimer’s, the only job open was at a prison. I taught an entirely different clientele whose only interaction with limousines was stealing them. A year later Alfred State College hired me to teach physics. I happily taught there for over ten years.

My wife’s boss, the superintendent of a rural school in western New York, begged me to teach physics and earth science. Helping young high school students was particularly appealing to me at this point in my career and the salary was more than reasonable, so I find myself happily teaching at Mt Morris Central School.

Five years ago, my wife pestered me about putting to “pen” some of the stories which I had created for the children and other relatives. I started thinking about a young boy and a white deer, connected, yet apart. Ideas were shuffled together, characters created and the result was the Return of the White Deer. This book was published by the Martin Sisters.

Years ago I gave a lecture on evolution. What, I wondered, would be the next step? Right away I realized that silicon ‘life’ had considerable advantages over mortal man. Later this idea emerged as the exciting and disturbing story called Reap the Whirlwind.

Two years ago I stumbled upon an old article in the local paper about a Brinks’ robbery in 1992. Apparently over ten million dollars were stolen and most of it was never recovered. Although the mafia was peripherally involved in the heist, it was unlikely they took the missing millions. This was the seed which has now grown into the young adult novel, The Runner and the Robber.

I have many other stories inside my mind, fermenting… waiting patiently for the pen. Perhaps someday I will even write about those elves which still inhabit the woods in the heart of Connecticut.

The Devil’s Spies

The devil has eyes and ears everywhere!

The Devil’s Spies

by K.C. Sivils

Genre: Historical Fiction

Needing to stop the flood of humanity fleeing communist oppression by making it to the divided city of Berlin, the communist government of East Germany took drastic measures. In August of 1961, construction of the Berlin Wall began.

Two young lovers, an American refugee worker, and an East German seminary student, find themselves separated by the wall. Desperate to be reunited and build a life together, Angela Wettin and Michael Dieterich, with Michael’s brother Joseph, set in motion a dangerous plan to escape by tunneling under the Berlin Wall.

Determined to stop any hope of gaining freedom, the East German Stasi, the dreaded secret police of the communist state, formed Department XX/4 to infiltrate and spy on the Church in East Germany.

Faced with betrayal, dangerous cave-ins, and family conflict, the trio enters a life-and-death race against the Stasi and Department XX/4.

Can they gain their freedom before they are caught by the Devil’s Spies from the Stasi?

 GUEST POST

What are your top 10 favorite books/authors?

The Bible – it has everything: history, drama, wisdom, horror stories (read Revelation during a wicked storm with the lights out), and just about anything else the human race can dream up. Then there is the role model himself, Jesus.

The Swiss Family Robinson – my favorite childhood book. I literally wore out about five or six copies.

The Maltese Falcon – my introduction to crime noir.

Exodus – Great story that mixes history with drama.

Band of Brothers – The testing of men under the worst conditions imaginable and the bonds that shared suffering builds.

The Hunger Games – Great story telling that has so much depth and history if you can find what is hidden in the story. Not to mention LOTS of conflict of every possible kind!

The Great Locomotive Chase – I love trains and this event captured my imagination as a young boy.

The Great Escape – A true story with tragic consequences that somehow managed to convey the strength of the human spirit when faced with great adversity.

Journey to the Center of the Earth – my introduction to science fiction as a youngster. This story was responsible for countless daydreams while I was bored in upper elementary school.

1984 – Terrifying story. I find the fact that much of it has come to pass to be deeply disturbing.

Lagniappe – one more just because.

Alas, Babylon – Required summer reading before my junior year in high school. Given the Cold War was raging, and Vietnam had just ended, it was a sobering read for us.

Top Ten Movies:

Where Eagles Dare – I can watch this over and over.

Terminator 2 – As far as I am concerned, this is one of the most philosophical films ever made.

The Passion of the Christ – You cannot watch this film and be unaffected.

The Maltese Falcon – My wife hates this film. I can’t watch it enough. The characters are all interesting and deeply flawed people, including Sam Spade.

Bladerunner – A source of great inspiration for me when it comes to my Sullivan stories, along with The Maltese Falcon and anything by Raymond Chandler.

Dirty Harry – A prototypical neo-noir film. It’s set in San Francisco, Callahan has his own code of justice, the villain is despicable, all of the characters are morally grey, and of course, Dirty Harry has some really cool lines!

The Green Mile – It’s just a great film that tells a thought-provoking story.

Hoosiers – Did I mention I played basketball and spent twenty-two years of my life as a varsity basketball coach? I get goosebumps just thinking about this film.

Sandlot – Great coming of age story and while I didn’t play baseball, I spent many an hour with my basketball on a court at the end of the street growing up.

All Quiet on the Western Front – any of the three versions

Lagniappe – always give something extra.

Stalingrad – horrifying account of the Battle of Stalingrad from the German perspective.

Top Ten Television Shows (In no particular order):

Firefly – Brownshirts unite! I will never forgive Fox for canceling Firefly!

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: This was a smart show as far as I was concerned. It had good stories, examined moral issues, and stuck to the original intent of the Terminator concept. It’s one flaw as far as I was concerned was the producers/writers thought Sarah Connor was the central character. Wrong, wrong, wrong on all counts. Cameron was the key character. The writers missed the boat on this one. The terminator IS the star of the three Terminator stories that matter, T-1, T-2, and TSCC. The rest are garbage. Summer Glau was magnificent in this role. She managed to convey the development of Cameron is such subtle ways. The actress was disappointed by the cancelation of the series. In the third season she was going to play Allison, the human template for Cameron while telling Cameron’s story of how she dealt with developing emotions and her attachment to John Connor. Good stuff.

New Tricks: British cop show that not only has good mysteries but is hilarious.

Star Trek: Next Generation: What can I say.

Mike Hammer: I know, it was cliché and campy, but it tried to honor the classic crime noir genre.

Magnum P.I. – One of my wife’s favorite television shows. She has a thing for Tom Selleck. I learned to appreciate the show because of the story arcs that played on the back story of the four male characters. There was a bond they all shared because of their shared suffering during military conflict. For Magnum, Rick, and T.C. it was Vietnam. For Higgins, pick the conflict Britain was involved in as its Empire died and the Cold War was waged. It was good fun too.

Rockford Files – My first car was the gold Firebird Rockford drove in the final seasons of the show. I had that car for 16 years. I also really liked the show.

Frasier – I’m not a fan of pretentious individuals like Frasier in real life but Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce where so funny as Frasier and Niles you couldn’t help but like the characters.

The X-Files – Creepy fun with a healthy dose of conspiracy theory thrown in as a bonus!

The Wonder Years – good stuff. I could relate to so much of what took place in the stories the show told.

My Ten Favorite Bands

 The Rolling Stones

 The Cars

 Dire Straights

 Blondie

 The Ramones

 Cheap Trick

 Prince

 The Commodores

 Lynard Skinard

 J. Geils Band

 Lagniappe – one extra

Czanna refuses him, even though the flame of love is burning heatedly in her heart.
