 The Harlequin’s Legacy

Book 1

by Andrés Rosas Hott

Genre: YA Fantasy

Dare to dream. Dare to believe. Dare to embrace your legacy.

In the enchanting land of The Vale, the grand city of Pivot stands as a beacon of innovation where scientific progress clashes with the now-dwindling beliefs in magic that the place once held.

Just outside of Pivot, 17-year-old Pascal has spent his life at The Skystead Home for Orphaned Children. Life outside the orphanage seems ceaselessly interesting, and shielded from the rest of the world, he wants nothing more than to explore. Already puzzled by unanswered questions about his past, Pascal’s concern deepens as he learns about a grim mystery of local children’s disappearances.

In pursuit of finding his place in life, Pascal is joined by Paloma—a street-savvy girl and former gang leader with a tragic past—and Pierrot—a silent, enigmatic companion. Together, the unlikely trio begins to sneak out of the orphanage to experience the one place that still embraces magic: the welcoming carnival.

As secrets begin to unravel, the truth unveils hidden powers within each of these three young adventurers. Their friendships are challenged as they overcome demons, both inside and outside themselves. Yet, each step brings them closer to the truth: a sinister plot that threatens the very fabric of their world.

Before they know it, the fate of the missing children has become inextricably intertwined with their own.

The Harlequin’s Legacy is a gripping tale of adventure, friendship, and self-discovery. Pascal, Paloma, and Pierrot trust in their inner courage and resilience to reach their true potential despite trials and tribulations. This story encourages everyone to dare to dream, to believe in themselves, and embrace the legacy that awaits them.

Adventure, magic, and self-discovery await! Are you ready to join Pascal and his friends as they uncover hidden secrets and embrace a timeless legacy? Witness the journey firsthand—grab your copy of The Harlequin’s Legacy today and become part of the story!

 GUEST POST

What are some of your pet peeves?

I'm definitely a cat person. I love all types of cats—how cute and fierce they can be, how independent they are, and how everything is always on their terms. That said, I’m an animal lover in general, except when it comes to ticks!

Where were you born/grew up at?

I was born in Osorno, Chile, but I’ve spent most of my life in the stunning city of Stockholm, Sweden. While I’ve always carried a piece of Chile with me, Stockholm has shaped much of who I am today, with its charming streets, vibrant culture, and long, beautiful summers. The mix of my roots in South America and the experiences I’ve had in Sweden gives me a unique perspective on life.

Who is your hero and why?

I firmly believe in the saying, "Never meet your heroes," because no one is perfect, and heroes are often just people with flaws like the rest of us. That being said, I admire people who spread love, kindness, and joy. Robin Williams is a great example. His ability to bring laughter while also showing deep compassion and vulnerability makes him someone I truly look up to.

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?

The inspiration for my book began with my fascination with The Harlequin, a character from Commedia dell’arte whose vibrant costume, iconic mask, and bicorne hat embody a timeless archetype of cleverness, agility, and courage. His mix of mystery, playfulness, and heroism sparked my imagination and laid the foundation for the world I’ve created. I was especially intrigued by the Harlequin’s darker roots, such as the chilling depiction of

“Hellequin”—a devil’s emissary chasing damned souls to Hell. This duality of whimsy and shadow

inspired me to craft a mythology where light and darkness coexist, entwined with themes of self-

discovery, courage, and belonging. Set in a world where magic and progress collide, this adventure is about friendship and uncovering hidden truths. At its core, it celebrates daring to dream, believing in yourself, and embracing the legacy that awaits—even when its shape is unclear. I hope readers will be inspired by its characters, their courage, and the enduring magic of a journey that balances humor and heart with mystery and depth.

Who designed your book covers?

Ary Fajriyanto also created all the illustrations in the book.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

Yes, the main characters, like Pascal and Pierrot, are inspired by my two sons, Pascal and Marcél. As for Paloma, she’s based on the many strong girls and women I've had the privilege of meeting throughout my life.

 EXCERPT

Emma stopped beside me and tapped the low back of the stool. “Anybody sitting here?”

“You are,” I said, turning it toward her with my foot.

“Great,” she said, easily straddling the stool, and I wondered what it would be like if she wrapped her long legs around me like that. She dropped my credit card on the bar between us. “I wasn’t sure when I’d run into you or Sheila again, so I went back and grabbed it before I left the office.”

“Thanks.”

“Do you want to know how much it was?”

“Don’t care. You have it in your system now, so you can charge it whenever Sully comes in. If it doesn’t work, call me.”

Appreciation and admiration warmed her eyes, and she laid her hand on my forearm. “I’ll do that.”

Her touch seared my skin, sending my brain to feral places, so I broke the contact by standing up to fish my wallet out of my pocket. But I didn’t miss it when her gaze dropped to my belt buckle, and I hid my smile as I returned to my seat. Lack of self-control was about to be a problem—or a solution—for both of us.

Sheila appeared with Emma’s drink, deposited a small napkin square in front of her seat, and then placed the drink on it.

Emma gasped. “It’s like my hair.”

“Nothing less for our Rainbow Vet.”

Emma snapped a photo. “For social media later,” she murmured, and then she took a drink, a long one. When she placed the drink back on the napkin, she grinned. “It’s delicious.”

“Need a menu?” Sheila asked, glancing at me.

“I’d better, or I’ll be tipsy in five seconds,” Emma said. “I skipped lunch.”

Sheila turned to me. “What about you?”

Instead of answering Sheila, I leaned closer to Emma. “Would it bother you if I ate beside you?”

“Not at all,” she said, hesitating. Then she added, “I think I’d like that.”

“I’ll take a menu,” I said, giving Sheila a glare, hoping a dose of ire would dim her glee. Did it take the edge off my cousin’s smile? Hell no.

At least she hurried away before she ruined everything. “Let me grab those menus.”

Emma pointed to the nearly empty glass in front of me. “What are you drinking?”

“I’m devouring a mouthwatering Animal Doctor.” I held up the drink and drained the last of it. “It’s one of the best things I’ve tasted in a long time.”

“Is that so?” Her pupils dilated, and she took a breath. Had she shuddered? Her next drink nearly emptied her own glass. “Do you like to… devour… Animal Doctors?”

Oh, fuckity, fuck, fuck.

***

Six Nude Hours Later

Olivia strolled into the Conclave, depositing eight large metal pans on the table at the rear. Phil and several other shifters from Six-Mile followed her, carrying more food into the gathering place, spreading it out on the tables the coffee folks had been using for most of the day.

I jumped up from the spot I’d chosen near the multimorph magnolia and jogged up the center aisle toward Olivia. “Hey,” I said, over-eager for another, more familiar face. “Olivia.”

She stopped short, crossed her arms, and raked her gaze over me. “Huh. No clothes. Interesting fashion choice for the prudish baby shifter. Interesting message you’re sending.”

“Well, you can thank Jasper for that.” I glanced around and leaned closer to her. “Seems like they all already know about me.”

She tipped her head back and forth as though weighing my words. “I’m sure you can thank Jasper for that too. He’s the biggest gossip in the clans, and he gets around.” Her eyes flicked to the side, and her pupils dilated. “Jasper.”

“Is that so?” I asked, knowing he was behind me.

When I glanced at the ginger shifter, he shrugged. “Your legend grows bigger than a hurricane.”

“Another wily choice, hmmm?” I asked.

“Like a fox,” he said, wagging his eyebrows and making a flourish with his hands.

“My ass,” I hissed.

But Jasper had already forgotten all about me. Instead of responding, he draped his arm over Olivia’s shoulders. “When can I see ye?”

Her expression hardened, and she stepped out of his grasp. “You know we’ve got too much shit going on for that.”

“Aye,” he said, not arguing. “But I won’t wait for ye forever, Olivia.”

She put her hands on her hips. “Your choice, Jasper. I take my position as second-to-the-alpha seriously.”

“I take her positions seriously, too, my dear.” He leered at her, making his risqué meaning clear, and I couldn’t stop my eyeroll.

Yet, for the first time, when I studied him more closely, I understood he covered his hurt, his insecurity, with humor. He really did have a thing for Olivia… a big thing. Maybe the truth of it surprised me.

So, I crossed my arms and then changed my mind about framing my breasts. So, I dropped my arms to my sides. Baby shifter vet lady still wasn’t nuts about being naked in front of a bunch of strangers.

Olivia studied Jasper then me then him again. “Logan’s on his way.”

I captured my bottom lip between my teeth. “It’ll be good to see him.”

“He’s looking forward to seeing you, too, Emma. Jasper… well, he’s a bit bitter about Jasper having all your time to himself.”

“Ye know I only have eyes for ye, O,” he interjected, pulling Olivia into his arms dramatically.

“Oh, shove off, and I told you not to call me that in public,” she said, pushing him out of the way, but she grinned at him before she marched back out to get more food and supplies.

I settled in a spot at the top of the rows of seating, situating myself so I could watch shifters come and go. Larger crowds arrived now, stopping to load paper bowls with the hearty stew Olivia had brought from Six-Mile. Stout, lager, and some kind of wine made their way out of chests filled with ice, and the cans whooshed as they were opened throughout the amphitheater.

A thousand shifters collected on the stadium seating made from the landscaped ground. A thousand shifters entered the safety of the Conclave, looked me over, grabbed a drink, a meal provided by Six-Mile, and then made their way to their seats. The cumulative roar of hundreds of soft conversations made a roar which reminded me of the one tornado I’d lived through as a kid on vacation with my parents.

Never in a million years would I have expected over a thousand people to see me sitting casually on a grassy bleacher, the blades tickling my ass crack, without me scrambling for clothes or ducking for cover. At one time, being naked in front of a crowd was a nightmare.

What a fucking turn of events. I heard the words in Logan’s growl, close behind my ear, and I shivered, beyond famished.

But I wasn’t hungry for food or thirsty for drink. Logan was drawing closer, and the spot he held in my mind grew stronger with each mile he took toward the Conclave.

Soon, Marcus Steele sauntered into the area, smoothing his light brown hair and searching the space until his eyes landed on me. He nodded once, but he didn’t smile or even react to my nakedness. He probably knew that Red Tail had smuggled me out of their territory so I didn’t have to see him.

After I’d thrown him out of my veterinary practice…

Or maybe he’d thrown himself out of my waiting room.

Multimorph or not, the actions made it clear that I didn’t want to deal with him or didn’t like him, and he had to be more than a little disgruntled about it. But he wasn’t Logan, and I didn’t care.

Wait…

He’s nearly…

Here!

I jumped to my feet as Logan appeared between the trees, moving into the space like a predator on the prowl. He’d lost some weight since I’d seen him last, and his hair had grown longer. He dragged his fingers through the disheveled mess as he stopped near Olivia and spoke quietly. My feet rooted into place, and my thoughts warred between rushing toward Logan or remaining aloof. Dragging my gaze from his face wasn’t an option…

His eyes widened when they landed on me, and my throat dried. He marched toward me, circling me once, twice. “God, Emma, you’re naked,” Logan whispered, his

voice feathering over the back of my neck on his third pass of visually devouring every inch of me. He grabbed the belt loops on his pants and adjusted his pants.

“Logan.” At least my voice sounded more even and stronger than I expected.

“You look well. Do you know what you’re doing to me?”

I took a step and leaned closer, swiveling toward him so he could get another good look at my breasts. “Probably the same thing you’re doing to me, Logan, and you didn’t even have to take your clothes off.”

The Vatican and other groups, fearing their own destruction if she ascends, simply want to stop Asherah using the Amulet of Cassiel to re-enter heaven. The race to recover the Amulet is full of intrigue, betrayal.

 GUEST POST

The Inspiration Behind the Books

Ian's inspiration for Dark Maiden comes from a Native American legend.

Among the Wabanaki, this blight occurs when an evil sorcerer refuses to stay dead.

Descendants of the Wabanaki still survive in Maine, which was one of the reasons

why I set the story in the locale of Nollesemic. I felt the characters were solid enough

to appeal to a large swath of readers without offending anyone. LGBTQ characters fill

in the modern twists that would not have been accepted even a few years ago.

Similarly, my vampire novel Cardinals is a new take on the Stoker legend with a large dose

of actual historical events. Fictional additions and twists on biblical and historical occurrences,

keep the story interesting, the reader engaged. I have always been a fan of the 70's vampire films

and wrote Cardinals with that in mind. I can totally see Ingrid Pitt as Asherah. I have taken a bit of

guff over casting a scandalous shadow over the catholic church, but they have given me plenty of ammunition. The faith fills in a good part of the story and fanaticism at both ends of the spectrum also gave me much to work with.

I love casting women in strong roles and minimizing the male influence. Sadly, reality has not caught up with that idea. Amy Radigan, Lilly Pham, Kellena Donnachaid, Cassie Wells, all epitomize women I have known and respect.

After being medically retired from the military in 2010, writing became a new identity for me. I take my time writing. The Long Game, for instance, took 3 years to write. Pulling from current events as I went along. Relations with China are now tenser than ever and the conflict in the south China sea is actually occurring almost following the theme of my story. I consider my readers intelligent enough to follow the multiple plot lines. I tend to keep the thrillers within the realm of possibility. Sometimes it might be a reach but nothing I write is impossible. Headlines are a big help. The saying is "You couldn't write this stuff". Well actually I can!

The political thriller is cathardic to write. Solaris is coming out in December, complicated story lines will keep the readers guessing. Horror is a fun genre for me and I have two ideas on paper that need filled out. I have dabbled with Science Fiction and Fantasy.

Cooper's Ridge was another labor of love and quite fun to write. I love space travel, aliens and first contact. Throw in some dystopian end of the world themes with a huge dose of multiple conspiracies and walah you have a novel. I am a huge Star Trek fan. I love Roddenberry's approach to everyday issues with technological spins. Solving the barriers to space travel with reverse engineering seemed obvious enough to me. The genius teenager as the underdog with a cadre of friends to help fight the faceless government what can go wrong.

EXCERPT

The wolf was watching Angus and Kellena but displaying no aggression.

“Birds of a feather,” Angus said, looking between Kellena and the wolf.

“Timberland. That seems a fitting name.” she said with certainty.

“Tell the stable hand to bring more meat and water,'' she continued to stroke the wolf's fur. She seemed to accept the name she'd been given without objection.

Kellena nursed the wolf back to proper health almost overnight, much like Kellena and Suzette’s recovery in London. In a week's time, the two were inseparable. Except for Angus, Suzette was the only other person in the household who could speak to or touch Timberland without a great deal of barking or growling. Kellena loved her just the same.

“That wolf makes me feel safe.” she told Angus.

“Lady Dartmoore attacked Timberland and my man Kinkaid.”

“Who else would leave marks like that on the neck?” Kellena asked.

She and Suzette had shared what really happened in London with Angus. Ever since Angus rarely let Kellena out of his sight.

Damned Yankees

Damned Yankees is a gripping tale set during America’s Revolutionary War, where loyalty is tested, and survival is anything but certain.

Damned Yankees

By Ray Deptula

Genre: Historical Fiction

Those who fight their nation’s wars are typically those least able to avoid it.

The world was, is now, and always will be a complicated and volatile place filled with those whose self-interests supersede more noble aspirations.

If history has taught us anything, it is that times may change, but human nature does not.

The competing interests and political tensions of the formation of our country were no more or less dysfunctional than they are today, with the best and worst of individual behavior continually on display.

Jack Halliday wants nothing more than to belong somewhere that provides him with security and values his worth.

In an uncaring world that devours the weak, he is forced to rely on his strongest attribute, his ability and willingness to fight, which ironically belies his benevolent nature.

Much like the fledgling union of the thirteen original colonies, Jack’s rebirth into autonomy constantly teeters on demise in a world where his decisions are all he can control.

I Am John Titor

In the world of internet legends, time traveler John Titor is the ultimate prize.

I Am John Titor

by Niamh Arthur & Sean Platt

Genre: Science Fiction, Time Travel

In the world of internet legends, time traveler John Titor is the ultimate prize.

Idealistic filmmaker Ramon Jimenez is stuck shooting mundane reality shows when he longs to create documentaries that change the world. But needing to keep food on the table has put his ambitions on hold…

Until Ramon spots a broken-down car linked to John Titor, an infamous internet legend who, at the turn of the century, claimed to be a time traveler from 2036. This could be the break he’s waiting for – if he can find a fresh angle.

RJ tracks down six different witnesses – each claiming to know “the real” John Titor.

But their stories don’t add up.

One says Titor was sent from the future to stop a world-ending war.

Another insists he was nothing more than a bored college kid creating an internet hoax to impress his frat brothers.

A third claims to have been set up to take the fall in an elaborate heist orchestrated by Titor in 1970s New York.

As RJ dives deeper, the lines between fact and fiction blur. Who was John Titor? Was he really from the future, or just a cleverly spun hoax? The closer RJ gets to the truth, the higher the stakes become.

I Am John Titor is a time-traveling epic that jumps between decades, genres, and timelines as RJ tries to solve the mystery of the true legend of John Titor.

EXCERPT

Time was disappearing on him, so he had no other choice. He had to turn on the machine, and that meant flicking on the Variable Gravity Lock system, then entering a code. Once done, he heard a loud chirp from an angry alarm, then a small light to trigger the short countdown as he secured himself in his seat and energy began to crackle around the car, a bright blue bubble of electricity as he stared out his windshield. Then the Mustang squealed to a stop several feet in front of him. The driver’s face — one the traveler had known forever — looked stricken. But that was all according to plan. I'm sorry, the man mouthed. The Chevy shimmered, streaks of rainbow light radiating out from the metal frame. The air grew heavy with the scent of burning rubber and ozone as a high-pitched whine echoed throughout the garage, like a vacuum cleaner on the fritz. And then the world disappeared.
