What Is Shattering The Idyllic, Seaside Community Of Rancho, California?

Grisly death. Bodies washing up on nearby Moonlight Beach. It’s downright disconcerting to the privileged one percent living in their gated communities in one of SoCal’s ritziest enclaves. Worse, they have no idea what or who is behind the slaughter.

Is It Sharks? Something Supernatural? Greedy Venture Capitalists?

Maneaters are known to inhabit the waters off Moonlight Beach, but shark attacks are rare. What about black magic, satanic rituals? A coven of witches lives nearby. Or could it be the venture capitalists, whose latest company harvests human organs for transplant, exploiting the vulnerable to save the wealthy elite?

The Violence Shows No Signs Of Ending

Two more people are killed on a cliff overlooking the beach – and all their organs are missing. This bloody terror isn’t slowing down. It’s accelerating. What the hell is going on? They better figure all this out before more people get butchered or, God forbid, Rancho’s inflated property values plummet.

Rancho California has been the scene of a series of either brutal murders or shark attacks.  One night, four friends practice an ancient ceremony and contact the spirit of dead Native American woman then have to fight for their lives against her killer.

The second book in the series, where two of the surviving women of Rancho California take a trip to New Mexico, is called Moonlight Canyon.  The third book, called Moonlight Rocks is about a battle over a meteorite that may herald the birth of a new Messiah.  Besides the Moonlight series, Yurie Kiri has also written a series of books about Japan and virtual reality games; the first book is called Tokyo Games.

Moonlight Beach won the 2020 Hollywood Book Festival’s award for Genre Fiction.  It is a 309-page read (or an 11 hour listen) and available in paperback, e-book or as an Audible edition on Amazon or Apple Books, just let me know and I can send you a copy or an ACX review code to use on Audible.

Synopsis:  Moonlight Beach near the rich and sleepy town of Rancho California has been the scene of a series of either brutal murders or shark attacks.  One night, two more people are murdered on a cliff overlooking the beach and now organs are missing, organs that could have been used in a transplant operation to save a person’s life.   Was it another random killing, murder for hire or an attempt to extract a much-needed organ?  Would someone really sacrifice a stranger’s life to give a loved one another chance at life?   Rancho California’s leading venture capitalists want to start a company that provides human organs to people in need of transplants; could one of them be responsible?  Then there’s a local group of witches who’ve seen and done a lot of strange things, first hand.  What role do they play?  Victims or perpetrators?

The story opens with another murder and introduces some of the diverse characters.

Anne, a successful real estate agent did the full moon ceremony because she wanted power for herself and for her best friend Susan but she never expected to meet the dead Indian witch Katomi through that ceremony.

Roy, an ancient Indian shaman knew all about Katomi because he’d killed her before and would continue to kill her every time she reappeared with the help of an ally like Anne.

Ike invested in start-up companies and hoped that the latest one, Human Engineering International could help him get a liver for his son provided they could get around the 1984 law that prevents the sale of human body parts.  Ike’s brother-in-law Dicky was happy to rope Roy into any money-making scheme from drugs to human livers.  Ike would buy a liver his son just to get his wife, Irene off his back while he pursued Susan the aerobics instructor.

John and Billy, the Rancho California policemen had lots of dead bodies but no suspects.  There was the girl without a heart found on Moonlight Beach near the sleeping surfer, then there were the dead guys on the cliff who were missing various organs plus the astrologer Diane who’d been ritualistically scalped in her car around the same time that a young couple had been tortured and killed on the beach.  Who was killing people and who was going to be the next victim?  Anne, Susan, Mary and Devo (short for Devoted-to-God) were all targets for the mysterious killer.

Author’s note:  Please don’t think that this strange story about a series of murders, organ donors, witchcraft and sex sprang from my feverish brain all on its own.  I have a good imagination, but it’s not that good.  The truth is, one night a few years back, I was sitting in Bolero’s, a Rancho California, patio-style Mexican Restaurant, nursing a margarita and waiting for an expensive Carne Asada taco plate when two women came in and sat down at a nearby outdoor table.

I don’t usually eavesdrop on other people’s conversations, but it was a slow night at Bolero’s and something about these women grabbed my attention and made me turn my head slightly so that I could hear them better.  I think that the part of the women’s conversation that really made me sit up went something like this, “You were a close friend of hers, weren’t you?  Tell me how she really died.  No one deserved to be killed like what I heard...”

As you can imagine, I took my time with my food and margarita, all the while straining to hear and remember exactly what they said.  Like I often do, I took a few notes on napkins and scraps of paper as discretely as possible.  However, the women decided to move on, before the story was finished, since one of them had promised to meet another friend at Jake’s by the beach.  I sadly watched them go but finished up and paid my bill as quickly as possible then I arranged my notes and filled in some of the blanks with what I could best remember.

After that I went to Jake’s looking for them but sadly I never found them again.  The story that they told was not finished, however they had given me enough facts that I was able to fill in some of the remaining holes after some research.  Although the following story was based upon the overheard conversation plus my research, it also contains assumptions that I’ve been forced to make.  In some areas, the truth has been well covered up.  As one of the women said that night, “You can’t believe how much money was paid to keep the details out of the local news...”

Excerpt from Moonlight Beach by Yurie Kiri, copyright 2019

Roy Vasquez parked his Cadillac convertible at the edge of the beach, got out, slammed the door shut and walked towards the sound of the crashing surf.  As he walked he concentrated upon breathing in all the natural scents of salt water, sea weed and the beach environment.  Suddenly he caught a scent of expensive perfume and he looked around for the source.  Roy smiled when he saw the young woman walking alone at the water’s edge.  How had she gotten there?  His was the only car parked along the deserted coast road.  Maybe she was alone?

The large flat screen TV over the back of the bar at the Rancho California Inn was playing the early evening news showing an attractive young news woman standing in front of a rugged California beach with waves crashing on a rocky shore.

“This is Monica Jones, Channel 7 News at 5.  We’re continuing our coverage on the string of brutal murders plaguing our little community.  Some people think that as many as five victims, all women have been killed over the last six months by the same person who left another battered body on Moonlight Beach just last week.  Like the others, there’s been no progress with the recent victim, another young woman who is still unidentified…”  The scene on the TV screen quickly shifted from Monica’s carefully made up face to a shot of a something lying on a deserted beach covered by a sheet and then it switched to a drawing of a young woman’s face.  “Anyone with any information about the victim….”

“What?” Beverly said shocked, staring at the screen.  “There’s a serial killer in this neighborhood?”  She put her drink down on the bar and stared at the man sitting next to her.  He was a local she’d just met.  “I never heard about that!  I thought it was safe here…”

“Hey!  Jose!” the man shouted at the bartender, a slender young Latino.  “Turn that shit off!  It’s disturbing the lady!  She’s from back east and doesn’t need to hear that crap!  Everyone knows Monica is full of shit!  Remember that alien abduction story?  It went on for a whole week!”

“Sorry Mister Goldman,” the bartender said glancing over at the compact, tough looking man with short cropped, curly brown hair.  He switched the TV off and looked back at Dicky Goldman and at the startled attractive, dark-haired woman sitting next to Dicky.  “Okay now?  Or shall I put on some sports?”

“I never watch the local news,” Dicky said to the woman, he thought that her name was Beverly but he wasn’t sure.  “Monica always says such stupid shit.  You would have gotten a kick out of her alien story…  Hey, you okay, baby?  Want another drink?”  She looked frightened but he wanted to get her drunk and up to bed in her room as quickly as possible.

“I’m fine,” Beverly said wishing that she’d never stopped at the bar after checking in.  She didn’t think that she’d go to that beach either after seeing the news.  “Why do you think Monica is wrong?  What happened out there?”

“She’s trying to turn a shark attack into a murder,” Dicky said with a smirk.  “What a bunch of bullshit!  Another drink?”

“No thanks, I’m feeling a little jet-lagged,“ Beverly said thinking that sharks were just as bad as human serial killers.  “I think that I’ll go back to my room now.  Can I call you tomorrow after my meetings, when I’m free?”  Dicky was starting to creep her out and she was glad that she’d kept her room number secret.  She hoped that she could see more of Monica’s news broadcast up in her room and a lot less of the local men, one of whom could be a serial killer, if Monica was right.

“Sure baby,” Dicky said glaring at Jose, the bartender again.  He blamed the bartender for screwing up his chances with the attractive out-of-towner.  “You’ve got my number, right?  Don’t worry about Monica’s wild stories, she’s just trying to pump up her ratings.  Anyway, call me tomorrow when you’ve got more time.  I’m going to be tied up later on tonight…”

"Tell me again,” the young woman said.  "I don't understand what you mean...."  She looked at her host, a smiling, but intense and fit, brown-skinned man with a short black pony-tail.  She had just met him at Moonlight Beach where he’d introduced himself as Roy and she hoped that he was rich.  He drove a nice car, he certainly lived in a rich area and he had a big house but he looked sort of weird sitting on the floor shirtless and shoeless, just wearing a pair of tight designer jeans.

"You want to have a real psychic experience, don't you?" Roy Vasquez asked looking closely at the young, brown-haired woman he’d picked up on the beach.  "You said that you did on the beach, didn't you... Fay?"  He hoped that he got her name right.  He went through a lot of women and their stupid names like Tammy-Fay or Mary-Jane all kind of ran together in his mind.

"Sure, what you told me before at the beach sounded cool and trippy,” Fay said with a smile.  "Nothing like I ever heard before.... but now that I'm here, you have to explain it to me all over again."

"Sure!  What I do is based upon old Indian ways,” Roy said with a knowing smile.  "See this house and land?"  He waved his hand at view out the window of the rolling hillsides that separated his house from the vacant neighbor’s house.  He hoped they never sold it; he liked the privacy.

"Yes, your place is beautiful,” Fay said.  She felt a little out of place however.  She was barefooted and still dressed for the beach.  "And... this big house, it’s all yours?  You live here, all by yourself?”  She hoped he wasn’t married.  Meeting a rich, single guy was her dream.

"Yes, but this land, all of it used to be Indian land,” Roy said proudly.  "The ancient ones explored this land and discovered, then used the various hidden power places!  Under the right conditions, in their sacred spots, they met powerful spiritual guides..."

"Really?" Fay said.  She was interested but she was also hungry.  She had skipped lunch and it was almost dinner time.

"Really,” Roy said.  "Do you want to try it?  Meet a spiritual guide?  Or an ancient Indian soul?"

"Sure,” Fay said.  "You know I do.  That's why I let you bring me here.  I don’t usually go places with a stranger but I studied American-Indian stuff in school.  And I do know a little about their religious practices... but didn't they have to wait for the right time or something?  You know, like a special moon rise?”

"Tonight’s the full moon, but it's always the right time in my house,” Roy said with a grin.  “You’re not from around here, are you?  Where’d you go to school?”

"Back east.  Anyway, why's your place so special?" Fay asked glancing around at Roy's decorations.  His house was filled with Indian artifacts that looked fit for a museum.  Maybe Roy was an Indian, she thought; he looked like one at times, but she couldn't tell how old he was.  Sometimes he looked old, and sometimes he looked young, but he was certainly brown and strong looking, and almost devoid of body hair.  That was what had impressed her when she met him at the beach.  He had been wearing nothing but a tight speedo-style swimsuit and his bare, brown body had rippled with god-like power when she’d seen him walking towards her among the deserted sand dunes.  “Tell me why.”

"Because this house was built, with solid adobe bricks, right on top of one of the best of the old Indian power places,” Roy said with a confident smile.  "Power is always available here, you just have to be open to exploring it..."

"Cool,” Fay said staring at a large stuffed rattlesnake in a lighted glass cabinet.  "Where is it?  Your power spot?”

"I'll show you in a moment,” Roy said.  "First you have to be prepared... you know, like we discussed on the beach.”

"You mean take some magic mushrooms?" Fay asked.  "Sure, give me some.  I'll do it with you.”  She shook her head affirmatively and smiled.  She liked drugs.

"You ever do mushrooms before?" Roy asked looking into her innocent blue eyes.

"No, but I know it's a part of the Indian religious experience,” Fay said smiling.  "So, I want to try it.  It’s a lot like pot, isn’t it?  I smoke pot.”

"Sort of,” Roy said.  He stood up and went into the kitchen.  Young girls were so gullible and trusting, he thought.  Good thing she’d hitched a ride to the beach alone, there’d been no one else to deal with when he’d scooped her up.

"Got anything to eat in there?" Fay called out.  "Or drink?"

"Wine and fruit okay?" Roy asked loudly as he rummaged around gathering up the supplies.  He knew that if she was hungry, her empty stomach would let the mushrooms act quicker.  He carried a tray back towards the young woman and found her still sitting cross-legged on the floor.

“Fruit sounds good,” Fay said watching Roy come back into the room with a tray balanced on one hand like a waiter.

"Wine too?" he asked, looking at her.  She looked good enough to eat, he thought.  She wore skimpy shorts over a bikini and had tousled brown hair.  Her firm young body was sunburned in some places and pale in others.

"Wine is fine,” she said, giggling in anticipation.

"Good,” Roy said setting the tray down.  He handed her a shriveled-up piece of dried mushroom.  "But take this first.  Wash it down with some wine."  He poured wine into a glass and handed it to her.

"You taking one too?" she asked as she tossed the dried mushroom into her mouth and started chewing.

"I already did,” Roy lied, sipping wine and watching her.  “You need to catch up!”  He saw that she had swallowed the mushroom and chased it down with wine.  He refilled her glass as she made a face at the mushroom’s bitter taste.

"That was pretty nasty,” Fay said.  "How long until it kicks in?"

"Not too long so don't worry,” Roy said smiling.  He picked up a piece of fruit and nibbled on it.  "Those are good ones..."

"So, where's your Indian power place?" Fay asked.  She picked a piece of apple off the dish Roy had sat on the floor and crunched upon it while watching him.  She wondered what the mushrooms would feel like but then she wondered when Roy had taken his piece.  She didn't recall seeing him eat one, but maybe he had done it in the kitchen.

"Outside by the fire pit,” Roy said waving his arm towards the back yard.  "But let's wait until the moon starts to rise before we invoke any power.  That should make the spirits more receptive to us, providing you do the right thing..."

"What kind of spirits are there?" Fay said excited.  "And what else do I have to do to meet them?  I mean, I ate your mushroom, is there anything else I need to do to get ready?”

"I'll help you,” Roy said expansively.  "I'll be your guide, just do exactly what I tell you and everything will be fine...."  He smiled at her.

"But what kind of spirits are they?" Fay asked while chewing noisily on another piece of sweet, tasty apple.

"Indian spirits of course.  One in particular is the powerful spirit of a departed Indian Shaman... killed on this very spot by a snake,” Roy said with a wide grin pointing at the floor.  He watched Fay’s blue eyes widen in surprise and he smiled broader.  Actually, the Shaman he’d described had been killed outside but he wanted to impress Fay.  Her expressive face had a glow of anticipation.

"A snake?" Fay asked.  "I didn't think that a powerful Shaman could be killed by a snake.  He must not have been that strong..."

"It wasn't a he,” Roy said, looking into Fay’s eyes.  "According to legend this powerful Shaman was a woman.  You know, Indian women could be even more powerful witches than men in those days.  Anyway, one day, this woman was walking through the grass when the snake bit her.  No matter what she did, she couldn't shake that snake off and she couldn't get the poison out."

"It probably wasn't a snake.  Maybe it was another Shaman or a medicine man who wanted to kill her,” Fay said.  "That's the kind of stories I’ve studied in college..."

"I'm sure it was,” Roy said shaking his head affirmatively.  "Anyway, after the snake killed her, she vanished.... turned into dust right," he pointed towards the outdoor fire pit like he knew exactly where it had happened.  "Out there."

"Wow..." Fay said slowly.  She suddenly felt rather weird and detached.  Maybe it was the wine on an empty stomach or maybe it was the mushroom kicking in, she couldn't tell which.

"Really wow?" Roy said amused by the look on Fay's innocent, expressive face.  She looked dazed yet happy.  In a little while he could do anything he wanted with her.  But first he wanted to use her to contact that departed spirit.  He had an ancient score to settle with that old witch and the spring full moon was the perfect time.

Searching For Jimmy Page

'Searching for Jimmy Page' chronicles 18-year-old Luna's transatlantic quest from her family's farm in eastern North Carolina to England as she embarks on a captivating journey to locate Led Zeppelin's iconic guitarist, Jimmy Page, in an effort to unravel a compelling family mystery.

Searching For Jimmy Page

by Christy Alexander Hallberg

Genre: Literary Fiction, Mystery

The unraveling of eighteen-year-old Luna Kane’s haunted past begins in the winter of 1988, when her dying great-grandfather, a self-proclaimed faith healer, claims he hears phantom owls crying in the night. “Them owls, like music. Can you hear the music?” he implores her in his final moments, triggering Luna’s repressed memory of her dead mother’s obsession with Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin’s legendary guitar wizard.

Desperate to learn the truth about her mother’s suicide, to tease fact from family lore in order to weave her own personal narrative, Luna embarks on a pilgrimage from her family’s farm in the pines of eastern North Carolina to England, to search for the man whose music her mother held sacred, Jimmy Page.

CHAPTER ONE

The night my great-grandfather died, frigid air howled through the pines and swirled down the chimney of his shack near our fallow tobacco fields in eastern North Carolina. My grandmother and I kept vigil at his bedside, a battery-operated space heater oscillating at our feet, kerosene lamps lofting shadows on the walls. He’d refused to install electricity and insisted the fireplace remain unlit at night. He claimed spirits talked to him through the flue at the Witching Hour. So did birds, especially owls. He said they were good omens, unless they flew inside your house. Owl in the house means death’s coming, he’d say.

I lolled my head against the wall, bare like all the others, no family portraits or prosaic artwork or thumbtacked greeting cards with snapshots of my great-grandfather’s progeny tucked inside. The shack was cluttered with clothes and other debris from a fading life, but the walls were naked. He preferred it that way, no memories or illusions, except the ones that came to him at night.

At the stroke of twelve he wrapped his knotty fingers around my wrist and squeezed. “Can you hear it?” he asked, his voice like winter wind crackling through kindling. An icy shiver ran through me. He had not spoken since that balmy summer night when I was nine years old, when the river

ran dry and the pines began to cry. The night my mother committed suicide—an abomination, he’d called it. A sin against Providence. He’d sat expressionless in his rocking chair while Grandma delivered the news, his face bathed in candlelight, then hobbled into the woods and chanted my mother’s name, like an incantation, a prayer for deliverance. Then he’d spoken no more.

I inched closer to him, close enough to smell the implacable stench of the dying. “Hear what?” I asked timorously.

“Owls,” he said. “Like music.”

My body fluttered as if I were falling out of oblivion, slowly, unwittingly, the air prickly and thin. Long ago, I’d heard a song about owls crying in the night, the singer’s wail primeval, in sync with marauding guitar licks, the beat like jungle drums. I felt them vibrating inside me just then, like a distant echo from another life, one that still included my mother.

“Can you hear the music?” he persisted, struggling to raise his head.

Grandma implored me with her eyes. “I can hear it, Granddaddy.”

He gave a shuddering laugh. “Ain’t in your head, girl.” “Where then?”

I waited, watching his chest rise and fall, his fitful breaths grow shallow—the caesura between life and death.

“It’s in your soul,” he finally said. He nudged his Bible beside him, giving voice to verse: “Ecclesiastes 6:10: That which hath been is named already.”

He dropped my arm and exhaled, his face pallid and drawn. Grandma and I stood over him, bearing witness, sleet pelting the windows, that song about the owls, its searing

guitar, haunting me, like fragments of memory I’d buried with my childhood—grainy images of my mother in her yellow bedroom with her lavender incense and votive candles, her black and white photograph of a Rock star standing on a stage at Kezar Stadium in 1973, dressed all in white, lips pursed, unruly dark hair framing a beatific face, guitar strapped over his shoulder, arms spread wide, as if he were awaiting crucifixion. The two of them were intertwined in my mind’s eye, like ashes wafting in a summer wind, waiting for water to receive them. I was born of water and moonlight, and of her and of him.

Grandma stopped the clock on the mantle to mark the moment of my great-grandfather’s passing, as if halting time held power—then forever now.

She handed me a flashlight then draped her overcoat around me, the scent of Jergens lotion and talcum powder lingering in the fabric. “Go on home, honey,” she said. “I shouldn’t have brought you here.”

“You didn’t,” I said faintly.

I’d followed her from our farmhouse at dusk, trudged the quarter-mile past the barn and hog pen, through the woods, where the footpath ended, as if I’d heard my great- grandfather’s keening call.

“Go home,” Grandma said, prodding me toward the door. “I’ll be along directly.”

I wrenched away from her and stared at my great- grandfather, the withered shell that remained, searching for some part of him that still looked vital—the outline of his body beneath the quilt, legs splayed as if the cat he used to own were nestled between them, his arm dangling over the

side of the bed. Grandma tucked it underneath the quilt her mother had made, tattered and yellowed with age, the same quilt that had covered her while she lay dying over half a century before, cancer ravaging her breast, flies swarming the window screens, attracted by the fetor of rotting flesh, all because her husband had believed he could heal her with ritual and prayer. I harbor a picture of that night in my mind’s eye—my great-grandmother’s bewildered stare, her mouth a perfect O—a last word half-spoken, an oracle undelivered. Now he was dead, his jaw unhinged, spittle on his grizzled chin, his only child by his side—the daughter whom he only recognized after she’d tell him her name, the name he’d given her seventy years ago.

“Do like I say,” Grandma said sternly.

I stood there breathless, my great-grandfather’s milky eyes—fixed and dilated, seeing nothing, seeing everything— boring into mine.

Grandma cupped my chin in her hand. “Don’t look back,” she said with urgency in her voice.

I never had before. Not after my mother died. Like my great-grandfather, I had not spoken her name since. I had not heard her voice in a brooding summer rain or felt her hand clasping mine in a sibylline dream or seen her face in the shadow of a stealthy Hunter’s Moon. I had erased her and the sainted sinner who conjured music and magic from an electric guitar, his photograph in my mother’s bedroom, her unfaithful talisman. I’d never looked back. Never. Until that winter’s night in February 1988, when I was eighteen years old, the past summoned like fire in my great-grandfather’s shack, phantom owls crying in the night.

It was inevitable. Perhaps it was even Providence.

Now would return me to then. The tale demanded to be told.

Trusting Love

What does a s’more, a tent, and a campfire have in common?

 Trusting Love

Clumsy Little Hearts Trilogy Book 1

by Julie Navickas

Genre: Contemporary Romance

What does a s’more, a tent, and a campfire have in common? For Ryan Prescott, it’s a typical weekend camping trip. But for Tess Browning… it’s a recipe for the truth.

Tess Browning earned the nickname Little Vixen for a reason. And she has no incentive to play by the rules anymore. Because why bother? All it ever did was trap her in a loveless marriage. Tossing faithfulness out the window, the only thing she is committed to now is her new code: keeping it fun, flirty, and deliciously sultry.

That is, until Ryan Prescott walks in and charms his way into her heart with a leather tool belt strapped around his waist. He’s sexy, smart, and as emotionally damaged as they come. And Ryan seemingly wants nothing more than to have Tess pick up the pieces of his broken heart.
But there’s one thing he doesn’t know about her.

When the details of Ryan’s past heartache come to light, Tess digs her hot pink heels into the ground and will stop at nothing to hide her past indiscretions from the man who stole her heart. Because if there’s one thing Ryan won’t tolerate—it’s dishonesty.

Will Tess manage to keep the truth hidden? Or, will the secrets of a lifetime shatter her one true chance at love?

Best-selling and award-winning author Julie Navickas brings back fan favorite, Tess Browning for her own shot at love. Readers of the Trading Heartbeats trilogy will recognize the flawed heroine but may not recognize the woman she’s become. After all, no one is above redemption. Fans of Lynn Painter’s Mr. Wrong Number and Katie Cotugno’s Birds of California will find a swoon-worthy and engaging romance in TRUSTING LOVE.

Excerpt #1

Beside him, she released a heavy breath and lifted her gaze. The deep hues of blue sparkled, each eye coated in a thin layer of tears.

“Wait, is something wrong?” Ryan frowned and propped his body up on an elbow.

She shook her head and smiled. Dragging a hand down the side of his face, she paused on his cheek. “This happened really fast, didn't it?”

You’re not wrong.

Ryan gripped her hand and pressed a kiss on her palm. “It did,” he muttered.

“One minute we’re picking out a paint color and the next we’re sleeping together beneath the stars.”

Their relationship flashed before his eyes, each smile on her lips gripping his heart as affection and desire built within his soul.

“It may have been fast, but that doesn’t make it any less real for me.”

A single tear slid down her cheek and dripped onto his arm. It rolled, falling to the blankets and dissolving into the material.

“It’s real for me, too.” She sniffled. “Maybe too real.”

A twinge gripped his gut. “What’s that mean?”

“Like, when is the other shoe going to drop?” She snorted. “When does the dream end, or the bubble burst?”

Just as cynical as me. You’ve been hurt just as bad, haven’t you?

Ryan sat up and reached for her sandals in the corner of the tent.

“What’re you doing?”

He pressed the first shoe into his chest. “I promise, I won’t drop it.” Holding the second sandal out to her, he placed it in her hands and guided it to her chest. “If you won’t.”

Her smile melted his heart. Eyeing a blonde curl falling in her face, he tucked it behind her ear as a shiver zipped along his spine—inspiration striking once more. “How about another adventure this morning, Ms. Browning?”

“Clothes on or off?”

With a wink, he pressed a kiss on her forehead. “That’ll be your choice.”

Hidden Scars

He’s a beast to all …. but for her, he cages his beast.

 Hidden Scars

Jade Book 1

by A. Akinosho

Genre: Forbidden Age-Gap Contemporary Romance

He’s a beast to all …. but for her, he cages his beast.

Naseer
My days of being an alpha are long gone. I’d resigned myself to staying hidden forever.
Out of nowhere, she walks in. Surprising us both, I asked her to “Sit with Me.” Three words that would change everything.
I would later realize that the universe had slowed me down, then gave me a second chance and that second chance came with Jade by my side. Like I told my dad, “I would destroy a thousand men for Jade.”
No one gets it. Jade is a need that I cannot do without.

Jade
“Sit with Me,” he said. Little did I know those three words would be the beginning of us.
Subconsciously, I knew the word “US” would only be temporary because I’m the girl from the other side, and they all consider me unworthy of him.
The beast is the one that makes my heart thump.
Unfortunately, the beast is forbidden.

Excerpt Jade: Hidden scars

I watch Jade running to James, and I can’t do anything about it. James stole that first kiss from me. I want to hate him and punch him for it, yet I can’t blame him. Nadra made that possible. She’s racing to him like it’s the norm and I can only watch from afar like a creepy stalker. I see the moment she walks into his arms, and he kisses her, openly claiming her in front of everyone.

If jealousy had a raging twin, that would be me right now watching James as he openly claims my woman and I’m the creepy older guy stalking them. I watch with a fist clenched as he possessively holds her, with no right or stance to punch him out. I was born with privilege and power in this country and most places in the world, yet I have no right or privilege to Jade.

“Do you want me to do something,” Rilwan says.

“No, that would make her dislike me. Right now, I’m on eggshells with her because of what Nadra did.”

“What did Princess Nadra do to Ms. Bankole,” he asks. I can’t keep things from Rilwan. He’ll find out, anyway.

“Nadra slapped Jade last night when she came into my room, calling me by my name without the title. I saw a look on Jade's face that I never want to see again.”

“I saw Ms. Bankole when she came out of the bathroom yesterday. She looked like a goddess, breathtakingly beautiful.” My glaring eyes shot up to meet Rilwan’s in the mirror with a look that said don’t you dare look at her. He breaks the look. “That’s why I came to you asking if you were ready. I guess the action had already happened.”

“Unfortunately, yes,” I answer, turning to watch Jade and James holding hands, walking on the beach.

She has talked so much about James, and I certainly didn’t realize James is half-black. Looking at them together. I subconsciously agree that they look good together. She’s hoping they end up in the same college. I’m hoping that doesn’t happen.

I continue to watch in disgust and anger as he tucks her hair behind her ears and laughs with her. This boy is pulling all the stops to steal my girl. No way am I going to let this happen. He may not know it, but he’s not the only contender for her heart and I play dirty.

Annoying Nadra put me in this position. James may have gotten the first kiss, but that’s all he’s going to get. I instructed one of my guys to watch James and Jade. They are to call me when they see them leaving the beach.

Rilwan and I head home. It’s painful to watch them together and have no right to pull her away from him. James needs to watch out.

After hours of no call from the guys, I’m restless. I headed to Jade’s house to wait for her.

Chances Are

Jade Book 2

I’ve waited five years. She’s not getting away from me again.

Jade:
Five years ago, I took the money, signed my love away and ran far far away as agreed. Now, I accepted the job that would be a game changer for my company and my team. Unfortunately, for me he’s a partner in the company that hired me.
We now work in the same office, which is too close for comfort and I must hide my secret from him. It gets harder everyday with every lie I tell. I’ve asked for a divorce, he laughed at me. My fiancé is a perfect shield from him but for how long can my shield stand?

Naseer:
I’ve waited five years for her, now she has a fiancé and children. That f...ing hurts
I know she’s hiding something from me, even as she perfectly weaves lies and truths daily. I intend to find out what she’s hiding and if she thinks there’ll be a third time of her getting away from me, she’s in for a rude awakening. She’s mine and I’m never letting go.

Excerpt Jade : Chances Are

I explained what my team was going to bring to the table. I didn’t go into details on the how, but I did give some information. I stay focused on my work, which is my preferred position. I now know why my gut would not check.

He's here! How could this have happened? I did my homework. I crossed all the Ts and dotted all the I, just how’s it possible that he’s here? The one person I must avoid is here. Taimani assured me that he'd been out of Rhanaz for a while. Even if he returned to Rhanaz, he was going to be busy with the king. But he's here–how-the-hell did this happen? Focus, Jade. He's nothing to you, anymore. I took the money; I signed the NDA. Focus, Jade, focus.

"How long do you expect before the app is up and running," Josh asks, bringing my mind back to the present.

"Presently, we can't give an exact time, but we have begun work. Once we have it all mapped out, we’ll have a concrete timeline, please expect about a month for us to have the mapping,” I answer Josh, making effort to avoid the man next to him.

"Any other question for us," I ask, avoiding any glance at him. I nervously rub my engagement ring. I keep my eyes laser-focused on Josh.

"I have a question. How long is your contract?" I managed to take a deep breath, he just had to ask or say something to me. Doesn’t matter that I’m freaking out.

“Six months, but we hope to be done sooner than six months," I respond, still looking at Josh.

“Good, any other questions?” Josh asked the room and got no response.

“We are adjourned,” says Ken. I swiftly pack up and move close to Orion.

"We need to get started ASAP.” He nods.

"Sure, I'll be in your office in a few." I brisked out of the meeting like a rocket is up my ass without a word to Lucy. As soon as I’m in my office, I lock the door. I need a moment. I've breached the first portion of the contract; I exhaled the minute I drop my laptop. I will my mind to relax but it seems impossible that he's here. I fan my hands because they feel sweaty. My heart races like I was on a raging bull ride, and quite frankly I am about to face a raging bull. Luckily, I didn’t wear red. Relax, Jade. I take a deep breath, and I exhale.

I cannot be flustered in my professional element, though I heard him ask for an office. I need to handle this.

I'm a grown-ass woman,

I'm a mom and a leader of my team,

I’m a boss lady.

I can surely handle him. I exhale, inhale, exhale again. I know handling him is not possible, I can hype my mind as much as possible, and skyrocket my willpower. Mantra all day non-stop. Deep within me, I know that handling him is me wishing I had a wand to rewind my past, but even a magic wand can’t rewind him. He’s too much of a force, a constant, that cannot be erased. No matter how I slice, dice, chop, shake, rattle. He can’t be erased. I’m pacing in my office. My mind is spiraling. I feel the beads of sweat seeping through my blouse.

I'm still pacing when I hear the pounding on the door and the rattling of the door handle. My heart races like it's about to burst out of my chest. My feet feel like they are stuck in a block of concrete with each movement to the door. I let out a heavy sigh.

Time to face Grumpy’s evil twin. I open the door.

Naseer barges in wearing anger like a well-tailored bespoke suit. Lucy is right on his tail as he owns the room, looking dapper in his perfect-fit black suit, and a sage color shirt, the color I always thought made him look debonair.

My body reacts to his proximity, my female parts awakening from years of slumber; now is so not the time to wake up lady parts. Lie back and be a dessert lady again. I mentally chastise my body. Because now is the time to face the beast, not crave kisses from the beast.

We stare at each other; though scowling, his eyes still cocoon me. The air is equal part sizzling and stifling as we stare. I whiff his natural scent and the Pavlovian response is immediate. Be still, girl.
