INTERVIEW

How long have you been writing?

Since fifth grade and I’m now 36 years old

Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you

write?

Most come to me as I write. Beyond the main character and love interest and those most necessary to introduce early, everyone else comes as I write.

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?

I spend hours researching names now. I like to get names that mean something specific for my characters now.

Do you see writing as a career?

Yes, though I think one has to be fortunate to make it their sole career. It’s been shown to be possible but it certainly isn’t an easy path.

What do you think about the current publishing market?

I love the fact that there are more options for authors to get their work out now. I wish the market itself had more diversity in what’s marketed in the mainstream.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

I read fantasy and paranormal romance, both queer and straight. SciFi as well

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

Noise, I need music or a movie, something. I don’t trust silence, I’m a parent. Even with the kids out of the house, I still don’t trust silence.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?

I have several going on at once right now. My brain is chaos and there’s really no calming it.

If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

Pen or type writer or computer?

Pen. Ideas flow better with pen to paper for the first draft.

What made you want to become an author and do you feel it was the right decision?

Once I started writing so long ago, I found a love for it. I felt that I was good at it and most importantly, I found joy in it without having to force it. I will always feel it was the right decision, no matter how it ends up. I can always say to my children that their dad wrote and published these books, so they can work towards their dreams too.

Advice they would give new authors?

If you’re not comfortable with criticism, this is a rough path for you. You have to come in with thick skin. If you don’t have it, don’t ever read your reviews and avoid Tik Toks mentioning your book. There’s always going to be someone that dislikes or outright hates your work. Sometimes their reasons are valid, sometimes they aren’t. You have to be able to take that hit and keep going. Oh, and never respond directly to those negative reviews. You’ll always come out looking like the bad guy.

What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters

first? What are common traps for aspiring writers?

I start out by naming the characters and deciding what they look like, what their personality is like, and what type of being they are (I write paranormal fantasy pretty much always). I do this for whoever appears frequently, including the main character and love interest, any siblings or friends, and the main antagonist or villain. I despise outlines because I can’t stick to them so this is as far as the planning goes for me.

Common trap, worrying too much about the word count. If you can tell the story in 50k do it. Don’t insist on writing this 100k word novel if you’ve already told the story in half that. Another common trap, only self-editing. As good as you are, you’re going to miss some typos and plot holes. Get an editor of some sort.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I try to be original. I write based off advice from my favorite author, Anne Rice. She essentially said to write what you would want to read. I cannot force myself to just write the same tropes others do, and they probably do it better than I would. I need to write in my own authentic voice.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Anywhere from two months to ten years. This book took ten years for me to reach a point of satisfaction with to release

Do you believe in writer’s block?

Yes, I suffer from it the most when I am depressed or overly stressed. I don’t have to be completely happy to write but if I’m overwhelmed then I have no inspiration.

Painting Celia

Celia’s yearning for art and León’s passion for painting ignite, but their journey teaches lessons far beyond the canvas.

 Painting Celia

Incubadora Book 1

by Maya Bairey

Genre: Women’s Fiction, Steamy Romance

"You can live in my pool house, if you'll teach me to paint."

Living alone in her bare mansion in LA’s Hollywood Hills, gentle Celia takes up art therapy, hoping it will soothe the deep scars of her past. Each failed artwork deepens her fear of losing to depression, like her father.

León, an intense painter struggling with a creative block, empties his savings to move to LA in search of new visions. He needs a cheap studio and some raw, authentic inspiration—his dreams and future as an artist depend on it.

Brought together by their colorful mutual friends, Celia offers León a deal: he can live in her pool house for free if he teaches her to paint. As he becomes her infatuated teacher and she his reluctant muse, both are laid bare by their pursuit of honest art. Could the desperate creativity that drew them together also rip them apart?

Unique and powerful, this sensual slow burn romance unfolds between mature characters, exploring themes of healing, trauma, and empowerment. Perfect for readers who appreciate new contemporary romance and women's fiction, this novel includes diverse, over 40, LGBTQ characters, making it a profound choice for those looking for explicit angsty romantic stories that mirror their own experiences and complexities.

SPICY EXCERPT

“Wait,” he said, moving close behind her, face hovering over her shoulder. “Look.”

She followed his gaze past her to the dark pool house window. The low light reflected her murkily, the polarized film tinting her nearly-nude reflection a faint pearly purple. She had only moments to be amused at his painter’s eye for imagery before his hands traveled around her from behind to caress her bare skin.

She closed her eyes and let her head fall back, but León watched their reflection.

It was another moment he had to remember—to paint. In his arms, Celia was warm flesh and scent and movement. He was free to explore her for the first time, the anticipation of it making his head swim. But in the window, he saw a shadowy mirror woman, faintly iridescent and indigo. She was shrouded, unobtainable, beckoning him with welcoming curves he could see his hands roaming, but untouchable.

He finally pressed his length against her from behind, pulling her body to him with one hand on a breast and one on her stomach, starting to slide lower. She inhaled as his fingers inched under the band of her panties and turned her head to his for a kiss. He was still sneaking a look at the reflection, his breath racing.

“León,” she murmured. He finally looked at her, the supple human within his reach. “If you are thinking about a painting, so help me god….”

“I’m not,” he said. “I mean, I can’t help it.”

She turned in his arms. “That light is going off.”

She left him, going down on one knee on the daybed and stretching to reach the lamp. He had just one second to see her, reaching forward with one arm, one leg stretched back to the floor. What a line, what a pose! Then the light was off, and he could only see her faintly in the reflected aqua light from the pool outside.

In a quick motion, he began unbuttoning his jeans. He was done looking. It was time to feel those places his brush had gone first.

Monsters in Hell

Things are changing, even for the Devil and his subordinates, in ways that will cause exciting, if not outright liberation . . .

Monsters in Hell

A Heroes in Hell Collection

created by Janet Morris

Genre: Dark Paranormal Fantasy Anthology

In the Heroes in Hell series, Monsters in Hell continues existing plot lines and relates new stories with characters from all epochs of human history as they struggle against torment and even more common problems derived from their unique personalities and backgrounds. But wait, things are changing, even for the Devil and his subordinates, in ways that will cause exciting, if not outright liberation . . .

The Green-eyed Monster - Janet Morris & Chris Morris

The Pied Piper of Harmelin - A.L. Butcher

Dogs of War - S.E. Lindberg

The Tarnished Horde - Joe Bonadonna & S.E. Lindberg

From Hell to Eternity - Joe Bonadonna

Fire in the Blood - Chris Morris & Janet Morris

What is something unique/quirky about you?

We breed Morgan horses. We consult with Morgan breeders to help them choose breeding combinations to achieve a desired result.

We are also song writers; Janet plays bass guitar and Chris sings and plays guitar. We have an album on MCA records. Look for Christopher Crosby Morris on Soundcloud or N1M.com

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

Janet wrote her first book in 1975 and Chris was the first one to read and comment on it. Their marriage survived. A routine emerged where Chris would read aloud all the new drafts and we would make edits on the spot. After a few books Chris’ ideas became frequent enough that we agreed he should have credit for writing, whereas before we had kept separate Janet’s storytelling and Chris’ songwriting. The rest, as they say is history.

Who is your hero and why?

Heraclitus of Ephesus, a pre-socratic philosopher, whose Cosmic Fragments foreshadow our knowledge of reality and how to perceive it. Among his precepts is the statement that change alone is unchanging. We’ve worked Heraclitus’ fragments in here and there throughout our books.

Which of your novels can you imagine being made into a movie?

All of them. We write cinematically, our books are vivid adventures undertaken without knowing the destination.  I, the Sun, The Sacred Band, Outpassage and M.E.D.U.S.A. are particularly suited to film. The Threshold Series is a feast of opportunities for today’s special effects creators.

What inspired you, to write Monsters in Hell?

Monsters is a take on what most people think hell is like. In our stories, there are certainly monsters, but they are monsters of a different sort as well as the kind with sharp teeth and fiery eyes. For example, the way the fallen angels fight among themselves is something unusual, but who knows, possible?

Convince us why you feel Monsters in Hell  is a must read.

Monsters in Hell is a must read only if you enjoy stories that push beyond the limits of clichés. Our writers enjoy telling stories without being able to lean on threats of death or pain as easy ways to motivate their characters. Also, we hate bar scenes. Get the drift? 😊

Who designs your book covers?

Most of our covers, including Monsters in Hell, are realized by Roy Mauritsen, a gifted graphic artist.

Advice to writers?

As for advice to writers, here is all we know: write the story you want to read. Start at the beginning, go to the end, and stop. Seriously. From start to finish you must inhabit the construct in a manner that makes the reader choose to continue; if you, as the writer, can’t feel what it’s like being there, your readers can’t either. So close your eyes, look at your feet where they are standing on the story’s ground; tell me what you see. Tell me what you hear. Ask at the end of each paragraph ‘what happens next?’. If you lose touch with it, wait until you’re back inside it. Tell the story that comes to you, and from you, to me.

EXCERPT

Fire in the Blood
by
Janet Morris & Chris Morris

“Do not give dalliance too much rein;
the strongest oaths are straw to the fire in the blood.”
– William Shakespeare, The Tempest

Sir Frances Walsingham steadied himself at the entrance of Martin Tower. As long as he had worked for a moment like this, he was nearly unmanned by its arrival. How long it would last he did not know. He must make the most of its every tick.

What made this moment so precious was the absence of Satan, temporarily sidelined by Samael’s betrayal. How long it would take the Devil to right his house was impossible to guess.

Until then, Walsingham must move rapidly.

Entering the Martin’s banquet hall, Sir Frances inventoried the collection of souls he might recruit for his purpose. For here they were, history’s cavalcade of thinkers, poets, shamans, rebels, martyrs . . . and fools.

Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland giddily pranced among these gathered, ushering the select to sign his guest register and the most notable to autograph miraculously preserved copies of their seminal texts — Henry’s famous library.

And the food. Tray upon tray of forbidden victuals of every kind and color lay open to all, many of whom were already lying besotted ’neath boards overburdened with fare. Paradise here was not yet lost.

Frances’ coterie of conspirators had just grown by one Nietzsche, one Jung, and one Joseph Campbell when he himself was accosted by the host of this affair. The 9th Earl was plainly in the throes of delight. Eyes gleaming, Percy’s first remark was a belch as he proffered a glass of port to his courtly adversary in life.

“Henry, this is all a bit too much; you’ll sink them before I can get them on board. Where’s Marlowe? Shakespeare?”

Henry could only manage a grin and wave his own goblet to take in the crowd. “O Walsy, give it a rest. They’ll be along in good time.”

Shakespeare was now the undisputed center of Walsingham’s emergent design — the reordering of the underverse’s power structure. Previously bounded — above by Erra, Babylonian god of plague and mayhem and his seven Sibitti, and below by Satan, Prince of Lies — Sir Frances’ cosmology had expanded today to include nonaligned influences possibly above those Above. There stood the bible writer, J, with the three weird sisters still recognized by many in hell as the Fates, before whom even gods were said to quaver.

Savoring the glass Henry had served him, Walsingham quietly recalled the previous day’s gathering at Pandemonium: Shakespeare stepping onto the Devil’s dais was a moment of real change. Humanity’s bard had triumphantly regained his identity as teller of stories past, present, and yet-to-be told.

Astounding.

Lest Will doubt his instincts of that moment and shrink back into subservience as publicist to perfidy, Frances must now emphasize and reinforce Will’s new station: author of eternal significance.

But where was Shakespeare?

About the Author

Alan McGill is an American author who lives in Northwestern Pennsylvania with a clowder of cats. Alan was close to his grandparents who grew up in the Great Depression. They were married young and remained together until his grandmother’s passing. His grandfather served in the Navy during WWII and was a gifted storyteller who weaved humorous tales about tough events. Alan grew up with these stories of right and wrong along with watching fictional heroes such as The Lone Ranger, Adam West’s Batman and Captain America. Heroes who stood up to bullies and protected those who could not protect themselves. This made an impression on the author to always do what was right in his own life and shaped his love for storytelling. He is a multi-genre author with his debut novel being A Cry in the Moon’s Light which is a horror romance and mystery series. As with all his books, one of the primary themes involves characters who strive to do the right thing regardless of the adversity they face. The second theme present in all his books is love. A pure and deep love that defeats all evil.

Shadow Cast

You can't cast shadows in darkness.

Shadow Cast

The Hawthorne University Witch Series Book 6

by A.L. Hawke

Genre: Paranormal Fantasy Romance

You can't cast shadows in darkness.

It's the start of my second year of graduate school at Hawthorne University. (I wasn't canned, okay?) Bryce and our dean organize an orientation meeting to recruit witches. Yep, it's time to teach Alondra's "honors" program.

Everything goes fine until that slithery snake-witch, Adder, barges into my home. She claims I'm cursing her master, Enora, haunting the dreams of her Abaddon coven. I'm not. Honest. But sometimes Alondra pops up inside me, acting outside of my control.

We hold a séance to ask the ghost possessing me to go away. I don’t see ghosts or spirits. I see evil. But you know, it’s funny, no one else seems to.

My sole mastery of necromancy might just be enough to protect Bryce and my unborn baby—or save my greatest adversary.

Cadence Hawthorne returns in this sixth book in the Hawthorne University Witch series.

Content Warning: Shadow Cast contains profanity, sex, adult situations and, of course, witchcraft.

The Hawthorne University Witch Series Book 5

When evil lands on my doorstep.

While Bryce and I are finally enjoying some quiet time together, a dark, shadowy figure crashes into our door. And it isn’t a small black bird this time. A devil is hurt, asking for my help.

Well, I just have too many problems of my own now. People don’t want to talk to me. And Bryce isn’t touching me. So what’s a witch to do? Haul up my legs, sit on a pentagram in a circle of candles, and murmur to myself.

My best friend Maddie thinks I’m under a curse. But, honestly, I feel like I have to do whatever it takes to save this town, even if it means teaming up with my archenemy witch Enora.

Evil empowers me. But this dark spellcasting also intends to drive a stake right through my heart and the heart of Hawthorne University. See, not only am I feeling alone, I’m getting expelled.

Cadence Hawthorne returns in this fifth book in the Hawthorne University Witch series.

Witch Mirror

The Hawthorne University Witch Series Book 4

Reflections of a wicked witch.

Bryce and I are trying to revive Alondra’s old metaphysical history class. We’re in college again, this time teaching. But It’s stressful under our former teacher’s shadow. Not only that, there’s a new demon-witch messing with my love life. So I’m going through that again. Well, at least this time I have Alondra’s magic to protect me.

Actually, not only do I have her magic, her spirit is inside me, possessing me. But don’t worry, Alondra’s ghost is a positive force here to help Hawthorne. I mean…are you good, Alondra?

A witch council is gathering at my house to reflect on ways to save us. They’re convinced Alondra is evil, but Alondra and I are unsure they know what they’re doing. Well, if I can’t hold things together—inside and outside of myself—I fear my plans of finishing graduate school at Hawthorne U. and starting a family are going to shatter.

Cadence Hawthorne returns in this fourth book in the Hawthorne University Witch series. Some spoilers cannot be avoided, but Witch Mirror is a stand-alone novel that can be enjoyed without reading the preceding books.

Content Warning: Witch Mirror contains profanity, sex, adult situations and, of course, witchcraft.
